PHILADELPHIA // The Philadelphia catcher Carlos Ruiz drove in the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning as the Phillies edged the Tampa Bay Rays 5-4 last night to take a 2-1 lead in the World Series. Ruiz mistimed a hit toward third base with the bases loaded, and the onrushing third baseman fielded cleanly but was forced to underarm over the head of the runner charging toward home plate, and the run was scored.

The game did not start until 2206 local time after a rain delay, and finished at 0147. Games Four and Five will also be played in Philadelphia, while the final two games - if required - will be in Tampa Bay. *AP
