Paris St Germain defender David Luiz ‘very excited’ about returning to Chelsea

Thiago Silva, the Paris St Germain captain, has revealed teammate David Luiz is “very excited” about returning to Stamford Bridge for the second leg of their Uefa Champions League tie with Chelsea.

Luiz spent two-and-a-half seasons at the London club before moving to Paris last summer in a deal reported to be worth £50 million (DH 276.2m).

During his time at Chelsea, the Brazilian defender won the FA Cup, the League Cup, and the Uefa Champions League.

Luiz will now head to Stamford Bridge on Wednesday aiming to prevent his former club from winning their second Champions League title.

“David Luiz is very excited to go back to Chelsea,” Silva said following PSG’s 4-1 victory over Lens that sent the Ligue 1 champions top of the table. “He had great memories there, he helped them to win the Champions League — so I would be very surprised if the Chelsea fans gave him anything other than a fantastic reception.

“He is a winner though, yes he has good memories of Chelsea, but his only objective will be to knock them out — and for us to progress.”

With the tie in the balance after the 1-1 draw in Paris, Silva is confident his team has what it takes to progress to the quarter-finals.

“We are better equipped than last year to beat Chelsea,” said Thiago Silva, referring to last year’s showdown when Chelsea overcame a 3-1 deficit at the same stage to eliminate Paris. “Even if you look at the game in Paris, we were the better team no doubt. If it was not for an unbelievable performance from their goalkeeper we would have won the game and would be travelling to London with the lead, we must take heart from that.”

hall of shame

SUNDERLAND 2002-03

No one has ended a Premier League season quite like Sunderland. They lost each of their final 15 games, taking no points after January. They ended up with 19 in total, sacking managers Peter Reid and Howard Wilkinson and losing 3-1 to Charlton when they scored three own goals in eight minutes.

SUNDERLAND 2005-06

Until Derby came along, Sunderland’s total of 15 points was the Premier League’s record low. They made it until May and their final home game before winning at the Stadium of Light while they lost a joint record 29 of their 38 league games.

HUDDERSFIELD 2018-19

Joined Derby as the only team to be relegated in March. No striker scored until January, while only two players got more assists than goalkeeper Jonas Lossl. The mid-season appointment Jan Siewert was to end his time as Huddersfield manager with a 5.3 per cent win rate.

ASTON VILLA 2015-16

Perhaps the most inexplicably bad season, considering they signed Idrissa Gueye and Adama Traore and still only got 17 points. Villa won their first league game, but none of the next 19. They ended an abominable campaign by taking one point from the last 39 available.

FULHAM 2018-19

Terrible in different ways. Fulham’s total of 26 points is not among the lowest ever but they contrived to get relegated after spending over £100 million (Dh457m) in the transfer market. Much of it went on defenders but they only kept two clean sheets in their first 33 games.

LA LIGA: Sporting Gijon, 13 points in 1997-98.

BUNDESLIGA: Tasmania Berlin, 10 points in 1965-66
