The end of a busy week in European football as the Champions League group stage reached its climax with mixed fortunes for some of the big boys. Spanish side Real Madrid maintained their remarkable record in the competition by beating Borussia Monchengladbach 2-0 to secure a place in the last-16 for a 24th straight year. In the same Group B, Inter Milan's failure to beat Shakhtar Donetsk meant the Italian giants finished bottom and failed to even secure a consolation spot in the Europa League. Another big-name casualty was Manchester United who lost 3-2 in Germany to RB Leipzig which meant they finished third in Group H, leaving Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side playing in the Europa League in the new year. Cristiano Ronaldo got the better of old rival Lionel Messi when Juventus defeated Barcelona 3-0 to claim top spot in Group G. Both teams had already sealed their places in the next stage. In cricket, India secured a 2-1 T20 series victory over Australia, despite losing the final match in Sydney. India captain Virat Kohli's 85 was not enough as the hosts ran out winners by 12 runs. The series was already in the bag after Hardik Pandya hit a match-winning 42 from 22 balls in the second game at Sydney, as India triumphed by six wickets with two balls to spare.
