Stephanie McMahon Q&A: On WWE Evolution, Ronda Rousey and a women's main event at WrestleMania

WWE's chief brand officer discusses her ambitions for the company's first network special made up solely of women's matches

The WWE break new ground on Sunday when their latest network special, WWE Evolution, takes place in New York. It will be the company's first ever event made up solely of women's matches.

Ahead of the show, The National heard from Stephanie McMahon, WWE's chief brand officer, on the importance of the show, remaining goals for the women's division, and the importance of having Ronda Rousey in the company.

On the role of Evolution in the women's revolution in WWE

WWE Evolution is a crucial step in the right direction. The crucial and next step in the evolution of women, women's equality, and women's wrestling in the WWE."

On the importance of having Ronda Rousey in the company

"Ronda [currently the WWE Raw Women's champion] is key to opening these doors. She has star power and presence. She brings a real diverse history and background from competing in the Olympics to being the first ever UFC female champion, to becoming the first ever UFC Hall of Famer, to starring in movies.

She brings an audience from outside the WWE spectrum so she has absolutely increased the interest in women's wrestling in WWE."

How she feels about her mixed tag match against Ronda Rousey at WrestleMania 34

"I wouldn't say I am an accomplished or skilled wrestler in the ring. It was probably one of the most challenging things I've ever done in my life getting in the ring with Ronda Rousey, with Triple H as my tag team partner, and with Kurt Angle, an Olympic gold medalist."

On if she has any plans to compete in the ring at Evolution

"I currently do not have any plans to compete at Evolution. This is about our women's division, but I'm always open to getting in the ring if that's what is best for business."

On if Evolution will become an annual event in the WWE schedule

"We haven't made any official announcements as of yet but if this is the success I think it is going to be then you can probably plan on it."

Looking at further goals for the women's division to achieve

"At the moment there are still targets. Ultimately will we have achieved success when we are no longer about the difference between men and women wrestling? Perhaps. I do want to see a women's main event at WrestleMania. Of course all matches at WrestleMania are main events but I would love to see our women close the show. I think that would be really a crowning achievement in this movement."
