Points mix-up sees UAE's Khalid Al Maazmi miss out on Asian Games jet ski medal

JAKARTA, INDONESIA // The UAE’s joy of a second medal in jet ski turned into frustration after a mix-up on the collated scores meant Khalid Al Maazmi was demoted from third to fifth place at the 18th Asian Games in Palembang on Saturday.

Thai riders Attapon Kunsa and Phadit Buree took the top two spots and Al Maazmi was placed third before the results were changed in the Ski Runabout 1100 Stock, with Cambodian rider Ou Moeut Saly promoted to a bronze medal.

In the Endurance Runabout Open later in the day, the Emirati riders once again failed to reach the medal rounds.

Ali Al Lanjawi, winner of the Runabout Limited on Friday, suffered mechanical problems. He could finish only eighth and his teammate Mani Al Mazroui sixth.

In athletics, Alia Saeed relinquished her women's 10,000m crown after coming home fourth behind Eunice Chumba of Bahrain, Sanjivani Kadhav of India and China’s Deshun Zhang.

Yousif Mirza, meanwhile, aims to put the disappointment of missing out on a road race medal  in the track event starting on Monday.

“Our focus is for the track events over the three days and obviously looking forward to make up for the disappointing result on the road,” he said.

“The dates of the track events were changed at short notice. We were surprised because our plans got disrupted. However, we don’t want to make that an excuse but go all out after medals.”
