European club football's premier competitions reached an exciting finale this week – although it ended up being one to forget for supporters of both Manchester clubs in England. United and the red half of Manchester fell to a nail-biting defeat to Villarreal in the Europa League final on Wednesday. The match finished 1-1 following a tense 120 minutes in Gdansk and then, after all 20 outfield players converted their spot kicks, Villarreal goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli saved from his United counterpart David de Gea to seal an 11-10 victory. Three days later saw the blue of Manchester City take part in their first ever Champions League final. Pep Guardiola's side took on fellow Premier League side Chelsea in Porto looking to complete a memorable treble, following their League Cup and Premier League title victories. But the London club failed to read the script and edged out City 1-0 courtesy of a first-half striker from Kai Havertz. It was a particularly miserable evening for Kevin de Bruyne who was left with a broken nose and eye socket following a challenge by Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger. Over on the golf course last week, Phil Mickelson became the oldest man to win a major title as he sealed the US PGA Championship in front of an ecstatic crowd at Kiawah Island. At 50 years, 11 months and three days, Mickelson beat the mark set by Julius Boros, then 48, when he won the title in 1968. We have picked out 25 memorable images in the photo gallery above.
