Messi produced one of finest games in a Barcelona shirt to help his side crush Real Valladolid 5-1 at Camp Nou, while Ronaldo's last-gasp penalty earned Juventus a 2-1 over Genoa.
There was also some familiar faces rolling back the years in tennis and golf.
Roger Federer sealed a remarkable 10th victory at the Swiss Indoors championship in his hometown of Basel. It was the 38-year-old Swiss' 103rd ATP singles titles.
In Japan, Tiger Woods won the Zozo Championship just two months after undergoing knee surgery. It was the 43-year-old American's 82nd PGA Tour title, equalling the record of countryman Sam Snead.
At the Rugby World Cup, England produced a stunning team performance to beat reigning champions New Zealand in Japan. Before the match, England had responded to the challenge of the All Blacks' haka by going against tradition and setting up in a v-shape formation. They were fined by World Rugby for their efforts.
