With the Australian Open hurtling over the horizon, the tennis world turned to the UAE this week. The inaugural Abu Dhabi WTA Women's Tennis Open reached its climax on Wednesday when the in-form Aryna Sabalenka thrashed Veronika Kudermetova 6-2, 6-2 at Zayed Sports City. The Belarusian extended her winning streak to 15 matches and made it three titles in a row ahead of 2021's first Grand Slam of the year in Melbourne. While that match was as straightforward as it comes in sport, there were plenty of shocks going on in football-land as focus shifted to cup competitions around Europe. Bayern Munich, the all-conquering Treble-winning Champions League winners were sensationally knocked-out of the DFB Cup by second-tier Holstein Kiel in a penalty shootout, after the second-round tie had finished 2-2 after extra-time. That came days after Hansi Flick's side threw away a two-goal lead in the Bundesliga to lose 3-2 against Borussia Monchengladbach. Turns out the Bavarian superstars are human after all. There was another top-flight side suffering a humiliating exit in the UK's FA Cup third round when Premier League Leeds United, managed by the much-admired Marcelo Bielsa, were humbled 3-0 at fourth-tier Crawley Town. Since the Football League's fourth tier was added in 1958, this was only the second time a top-flight side had lost by three or more goals to opposition from that level in the competition. There was no such glory for eight-tier Marine, sadly, who did not find Jose Mourinho's Tottenham Hotspur in such a forgiving mood. Spurs ran out 5-0 winners, although it did take them 24 minutes to score their first goal on Merseyside.
