Faisal Al Ketbi lived up to his top billing by winning the UAE’s second jiu-jitsu gold at the Asian Games on Saturday.
Al Ketbi won by referee's decision following a 1-1 deadlock against Jordan's Sami Zaid to take the men’s 94-kilogram final at the Jakarta Convention Centre.
Omar Al Fadhli, though, had to settle for silver in the men’s 62kg final after narrowly losing to Darkhan Nortayev.
The decision of this result came after the UAE contingent called for a video referral of a late advantage point awarded to Nortayev. After the review, however, organisers retained the 2-1 score in favour of the Kazakh.
Saeed Al Mazroui picked up a bronze medal when he beat Daniel Hilal in the men’s 62kg after the Emirati, who turns 20 next month, took a 2-0 lead from a sweep midway through the five-minute final.

Earlier on Saturday, Khalid Al Maazmi was denied a bronze medal even though he was initially understood to have finished third in the Jet Ski Runabout 1100 Stock in Palembang, only for the result to be contested. The Thai pair of Attapon Kunsa and Phadit Buree won gold and silver, while Ou Moeut Saly claimed bronze. Al Maazmi was eventually marked fifth.
Meanwhile, Alia Saeed, the defending champion of the women’s 10,000 metres, missed out on a medal after placing fourth behind Eunice Chumba of Bahrain, India's Sanjivani Jadhav and Deshun Zhang of China.
At this stage, the UAE have three gold medals, four silver and one bronze. Their record Asian Games tally came in Doha, Qatar, in 2006 when they won three gold, four silver and three bronze medals.
