AL AIN // Mohammed al Dhaheri can clinch the DD2 class title at the Rotax Max Challenge today after recording an emphatic win yesterday.
Al Dhaheri won round 11 by 11.5 seconds yesterday while Sheikh Khalid bin Khalifa, his nearest challenger, suffered rear wheel failure and was forced to retire.
Sheikh Khalid must now win round 12 today and hope al Dhaheri does not score highly if he is to claim the crown. The winner of the championship will represent the UAE in the Rotax Max World Finals to be held at Al Ain Raceway in November. Yesterday, Patrick Jarjour finished second while Ali al Darmaki drove an aggressive race to claim the final podium spot. Ashraf Raza produced one of the drives of the day to recover from an early race incident, which left him last, to finish fourth.
The Senior Max class provided entertainment, with a top-three train of Maurits Knopjes, Sanad Al Rawahi, of the Oman Karting Team, and Niki Dedic. From start to finish the three leaders raced bumper to bumper, with Knopjes experiencing low-grip problems he was forced to drive defensively.
Al Rawahi pushed as hard as he could but had to settle for second behind Knopjes. Meanwhile in the MaxMasters class, Arnoud Bouf continued his run of form with yet another win ahead of Luc Bauwmans, who ended up driving a solitary race after championship leader Andrew Fuller suffered a mechanical failure. Walid al Qassemi came home third.
In Junior Max, Piers Pakenham-Walsh must out score Abdullah al Rawahi today to win the title after finishing second to his rival yesterday.
