NHL: Blackhawks clinch Presidents' Trophy after powering to win over Edmonton

Chicago coach Joel Quenneville sets his sights on the Stanley Cup after his side cement their position as the best team in the regular season.

The Chicago Blackhawks sealed the Presidents' Trophy with a 4-1 win over the Edmonton Oilers.

Patrick Kane led the way for the Blackhawks with a goal an two assists as they ensured they will finish the regular season with the league's best record.

Jonathan Toews, Patrick Sharp and Johnny Oduya scored the Blackhawks' other goals, while Nail Yakupov tallied for the Oilers.

"To have the start to the season that we had and to keep playing consistently is an amazing thing for our team," Toews said afterwards.

"We've shown a lot of character, we've definitely learnt from our mistakes the last few years, and we've grown. I think everyone has matured as players in this locker room.

"We have to use that experience and use that confidence from being the number one team all year and carry it into the playoffs."

Joel Quenneville, the Chicago coach, said he was happy to have the best regular-season record but his goal was still to win the Stanley Cup for the second time in four years.

"The start of our year really put us in a great spot, but the consistency has been there, as well," Quenneville said.

"I congratulate the guys, they deserve what they got.

"Everybody had a hand in it, everybody contributed. It was a real, good team effort across the board. But I don't think we want to get too excited, we have some serious work to do still."

The Detroit Red Wings retook eighth place in the Western Conference with a 3-1 win over the Los Angeles Kings.

Pavel Datsyuk, Jordin Tootoo and Johan Franzen got the goals for Detroit, who edged ahead of the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Elsewhere, Martin St Louis scored a hat-trick in the Tampa Bay Lightning's 5-2 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Phoenix Coyotes beat the San Jose Sharks 2-1.
