Arsene Wenger, the Arsenal manager, is close to committing his long-term future to the London club, reinforcing his faith and belief in a young side that he is sure will win major honours sooner rather than later. Wenger, who took over in September 1996 and is embarking on his 15th season in charge, turns 61 in October and will be out of contract at the end of this season. The Frenchman told a news conference ahead of their opening Premier League game of the new season at Liverpool today that a new deal was on the table.
"I have to show how much I believe in this team by showing my commitment," he said. "My situation will be sorted out very soon. "I believe my commitment to the club has nothing to do with the speculation of how the season would go, because that would be unfair. "If I do not do well, and one day the club is not happy with me I can completely understand that I do not stay here any more. But I believe we will do well."
Meanwhile, Roy Hodgson, the Liverpool manager says he does not want Javier Mascherano to leave the club and that new signing Christian Poulsen has not been brought in as a replacement for the Argentine. Poulsen was presented to the media yesterday after signing a three-year contract following his £4.5 million (Dh26m) move from Juventus. "I don't want to let Javier Mascherano go. At the moment Javier has shown no signs of going," Hodgson said.
Manchester United open their season at home to Newcastle United on Monday. While the match may be too soon for Bebe, the new £7m signing, to make his debut, Sir Alex Ferguson, the United manager, has described the 20-year-old Portuguese striker's move from Vitoria de Guimaraes as a fairy tale. Bebe played in a team made up of homeless players during a spell on the streets before being spotted by the Portuguese third division team Estrela Amadora. Now he will get the chance to feature for one of the world's most famous clubs.
"It is a fairy tale when you read about his background," Ferguson said. "But it is one of those things that happens when you identify someone with potential." * Press Association Liverpool v Arsenal, today, 7pm, Man United v Newcastle, Monday, 11pm, both Abu Dhabi Sports 3 & 5, to order call 800-2388 or log on to www.admcsport.com
