Morocco and Zimbabwe progressed to the quarter-finals of the African Nations Championship with a 3-1 win over Uganda and a 1-0 win over Burkina Faso, respectively on Monday.
The two countries finished with five points each while Uganda ended the group stage with four points and Burkina Faso with one.
Their reward is Morocco playing one of the title favourites Nigeria in the quarter-final on Saturday while Zimbabwe will play Mali also on Saturday.
Morocco won the group on goal difference, while Zimbabwe progressed thanks largely to their outstanding goalkeeper George Chigova, who is yet to concede a goal in the tournament.
Zimbabwe – the only side not to have conceded a goal – will though have to be more potent in attack as they mustered only their first goal of the championship on Monday through Masimba Mambare, his header ending the Zimbabweans woeful run of 236 minutes without a goal.
The game was played in very windy conditions at the Athlone Stadium but the Zimbabweans enjoyed loads of support from a lot of compatriots who are based in the country – many of them economic refugees.
Morocco’s joy was Uganda’s pain as the Ugandans had gone into the final round with a two point lead and a draw would have sufficed for them to reach the last eight.
However, the ‘Atlas Lions’ – seven of whose players come from World Club Championship finalists Raja Casablanca – having been pegged back at 1-1 on the hour mark showed steel to get the result they needed to qualify for the quarter-finals.
Two late goals saw them home as Mouhssine Iajour scored in the 77th minutes and Abdelkbir El Ouadi netted in the third minute of stoppage time to keep alive their hopes of the title – having knocked out titleholders Tunisia in the qualifying round they will fancy their chances of going all the way.

Multitasking pays off for money goals
Tackling money goals one at a time cost financial literacy expert Barbara O'Neill at least $1 million.
That's how much Ms O'Neill, a distinguished professor at Rutgers University in the US, figures she lost by starting saving for retirement only after she had created an emergency fund, bought a car with cash and purchased a home.
"I tell students that eventually, 30 years later, I hit the million-dollar mark, but I could've had $2 million," Ms O'Neill says.
Too often, financial experts say, people want to attack their money goals one at a time: "As soon as I pay off my credit card debt, then I'll start saving for a home," or, "As soon as I pay off my student loan debt, then I'll start saving for retirement"."
People do not realise how costly the words "as soon as" can be. Paying off debt is a worthy goal, but it should not come at the expense of other goals, particularly saving for retirement. The sooner money is contributed, the longer it can benefit from compounded returns. Compounded returns are when your investment gains earn their own gains, which can dramatically increase your balances over time.
"By putting off saving for the future, you are really inhibiting yourself from benefiting from that wonderful magic," says Kimberly Zimmerman Rand , an accredited financial counsellor and principal at Dragonfly Financial Solutions in Boston. "If you can start saving today ... you are going to have a lot more five years from now than if you decide to pay off debt for three years and start saving in year four."

Who is Mohammed Al Halbousi?
The new speaker of Iraq’s parliament Mohammed Al Halbousi is the youngest person ever to serve in the role.
The 37-year-old was born in Al Garmah in Anbar and studied civil engineering in Baghdad before going into business. His development company Al Hadeed undertook reconstruction contracts rebuilding parts of Fallujah’s infrastructure.
He entered parliament in 2014 and served as a member of the human rights and finance committees until 2017. In August last year he was appointed governor of Anbar, a role in which he has struggled to secure funding to provide services in the war-damaged province and to secure the withdrawal of Shia militias. He relinquished the post when he was sworn in as a member of parliament on September 3.
He is a member of the Al Hal Sunni-based political party and the Sunni-led Coalition of Iraqi Forces, which is Iraq’s largest Sunni alliance with 37 seats from the May 12 election.
He maintains good relations with former Prime Minister Nouri Al Maliki’s State of Law Coaliton, Hadi Al Amiri’s Badr Organisation and Iranian officials.
