More misery for Maradona's men

Argentina are in danger of missing out on the World Cup for the first time since 1970 after losing 2-0 to Ecuador in Quito.

Argentina, twice world champions, are in danger of missing out on the World Cup for the first time since 1970 after Carlos Tevez missed a first-half penalty in a 2-0 defeat away to Ecuador, in Quito on Wednesday. With four games to play in the 10-team South American qualifying section, Diego Maradona's team sit fourth in the table, two points ahead of Ecuador with Uruguay a further two back in sixth place. The top four teams qualify automatically for South Africa, with the fifth facing a two-legged play-off against the fourth-placed Concacaf team from North America - currently Mexico.

Maradona, whose side host group leaders and eternal rivals Brazil in their next qualifier, was not convinced that Ecuador deserved to win the game, saying: "They didn't do anything in the first half. In the second half, they got a couple of rebounds and they scored two goals. If we had scored a goal, it would have finished the game off." Tevez was upended by Ecuador goalkeeper Marcelo Elizaga in the box in the 28th minute. The Argentine-born Elizaga escaped the red card and then saved Tevez's weak penalty.

Left-back Walter Ayovi, with a superb 25-yard strike, and Pablo Palacios scored in the last 20 minutes to hand Argentina their second defeat in four World Cup qualifiers under Maradona. Ecuador coach Sixto Vizuete said: "These three points are worth their weight in gold and we're satisfied because we beat great opponents." Meanwhile, Brazil striker Robinho is hoping to secure qualification with the game in Argentina on Sept 5. Robinho and Nilmar scored in an eight-minute period either side of half-time as Brazil rallied from a goal down to beat previous table toppers Paraguay 2-1. "They were three important points, now we hope to beat Argentina in the next match to seal the qualification," Manchester City forward Robinho said.

Kaka, who this week moved from AC Milan to Real Madrid in a ?65 million (Dh333.5m), tipped his hat to the fans in Recife. "I want to dedicate this victory to the followers in the Pernambucano stadium for the love and support they showed in the more difficult moments of the match," he said. Chile moved closer to World Cup 2010 with a 4-0 thrashing of Bolivia. Led by enigmatic former Argentina coach Marcelo Bielsa, Chile climbed to second, a point behind Brazil. Both teams can qualify, if results go their way, in the next round of games.

Only Nevada and Arizona remain to be called, and both swing states are leaning Republican. Gender pay parity on track in the UAE

The UAE has a good record on gender pay parity, according to Mercer's Total Remuneration Study.

"In some of the lower levels of jobs women tend to be paid more than men, primarily because men are employed in blue collar jobs and women tend to be employed in white collar jobs which pay better," said Ted Raffoul, career products leader, Mena at Mercer. "I am yet to see a company in the UAE – particularly when you are looking at a blue chip multinationals or some of the bigger local companies – that actively discriminates when it comes to gender on pay."

Mr Raffoul said most gender issues are actually due to the cultural class, as the population is dominated by Asian and Arab cultures where men are generally expected to work and earn whereas women are meant to start a family.

"For that reason, we see a different gender gap. There are less women in senior roles because women tend to focus less on this but that’s not due to any companies having a policy penalising women for any reasons – it’s a cultural thing," he said.

As a result, Mr Raffoul said many companies in the UAE are coming up with benefit package programmes to help working mothers and the career development of women in general.

Tips on buying property during a pandemic

Islay Robinson, group chief executive of mortgage broker Enness Global, offers his advice on buying property in today's market.

While many have been quick to call a market collapse, this simply isn’t what we’re seeing on the ground. Many pockets of the global property market, including London and the UAE, continue to be compelling locations to invest in real estate.

While an air of uncertainty remains, the outlook is far better than anyone could have predicted. However, it is still important to consider the wider threat posed by Covid-19 when buying bricks and mortar. 

Anything with outside space, gardens and private entrances is a must and these property features will see your investment keep its value should the pandemic drag on. In contrast, flats and particularly high-rise developments are falling in popularity and investors should avoid them at all costs.

Attractive investment property can be hard to find amid strong demand and heightened buyer activity. When you do find one, be prepared to move hard and fast to secure it. If you have your finances in order, this shouldn’t be an issue.

Lenders continue to lend and rates remain at an all-time low, so utilise this. There is no point in tying up cash when you can keep this liquidity to maximise other opportunities. 

Keep your head and, as always when investing, take the long-term view. External factors such as coronavirus or Brexit will present challenges in the short-term, but the long-term outlook remains strong. 

Finally, keep an eye on your currency. Whenever currency fluctuations favour foreign buyers, you can bet that demand will increase, as they act to secure what is essentially a discounted property.
