Al Ahly 0 Monterrey 2 Monterrey ruthlessly punished wasteful Al Ahly to claim third place at the Club World Cup. Goals from Jesus Corona goal and Cesar Delgado were enough to see the CONCACAF champions win - but it was far from plain sailing for the Mexican side, with the Egyptians seeing plenty of the ball and creating numerous goal-scoring opportunities. "We are very happy because this is our second Club World Cup and compared to last year we did better," Victor Vucetich, the Monterrey coach, said after the match. "We are able to get a medal and that's a very good thing for Mexico and CONCACAF." After seeing a first-minute goal rightly chalked off for offside, some lovely one-touch passing and a goalkeeping howler from Mahmoud Abou Elseoud put the Mexican side ahead less than two minutes later. Sayed Moawad looked certain to stop Corona scoring but Abou Elseoud got in his way, the ball breaking for an easy tap-in. Al Ahly should have equalised, Emad Meteab heading Walid Soliman's free kick against the post - Aldo de Nigris clearing the rebound - while Ahmed Fathi was closed down by Jonathan Orozco after a sweeping move. Recalled striker Mohamed Aboutrika then sent a diving header wide from Moawad's cross, hurting himself in the process. Aboutrika, 34, forced a fine reaction save from Orozco with a turn and shot shortly after half-time, the goalkeeper also producing a double-stop from Abdalla Said and substitute Elsayed Hamdi in the 65th minute. It proved crucial as, seconds later, Delgado showed Al-Ahly how to finish, coolly clipping the ball over Abou Elseoud after being played clean through. Aboutrika was denied again by a superb Orozco save from his header and Monamed Naguib nodded straight at the keeper, who preserved a clean sheet with another stop late on. "I am very much disappointed," said Hossam El-Badry, the Al Ahly coach, afterwards. "We wanted to be third. We had many opportunities which we missed. If those opportunities had been taken then I think we would have been able to reverse the score." Follow us
