Mo Farah could return to fitness before Commonwealth Games

Mo Farah could return to fitness in time to compete at both the Commonwealth Games and the European Championships, according to British Athletics performance director Neil Black.

Farah’s participation in both events was thrown into doubt when he was forced to pull out of last weekend’s Glasgow Grand Prix after suffering abdominal pains.

But the 31-year-old has been named in the 74-strong Great Britain and Northern Ireland squad for the Europeans, which take place in Zurich from August 12-17.

And Black is also confident that Farah will be fit enough to race in both the 5000m and 10000m at the Commonwealths, which begin next week in Glasgow.

Black said: “Mo has had some challenges with his health which have all been dealt with and he is now phasing back into full training.

“He is really positive about things and he is thinking optimistically about the summer.

“Obviously it would be impossible for him at this stage to be 100 per cent sure he will be able to do everything, [but] that’s the plan and there is no reason at this stage to think otherwise.”

Joining Farah in the team for Zurich are world champions Christine Ohuruogu and Dai Greene, subject to their attaining the required qualification marks before August 3.

Ohuruogu had originally been expected to only make herself available for the 4x400m relay but indicated her desire to be considered for the individual event.

Meanwhile Greene has been struggling for form this season as he looks to get back into a position to retain the 400m hurdles title he won in Delhi in 2010.

Black added: “I was really happy to use the clause in our selection policy to create more time for people who believe are realistic medal contenders for Zurich.

“Dai has got the Commonwealth Games to use as part of his progression. Christine is taking a lighter year to allow her body to recover from the intensity, but it was Christine who came forward and said she would really love to give it a shot.”

South London sprinter James Dasaolu has won the battle for the third and final men’s 100m slot alongside the already-qualified Dwain Chambers and Harry Aikines-Aryeetey.

Rising heptathlon star Katarina Johnson-Thompson will focus solely on the long jump while fellow heptathlete Morgan Lake will contest the high jump.

Eight athletes will make their senior international debuts including former world youth silver medallist Alison Leonard in the women’s 800m and reigning European junior champion Jake Wightman in the men’s 1500m.
