MLB round-up: Yankees struggle to stretch win streak

Jason Hammel tossed a one-hit shutout to lead the Baltimore Orioles to a 5-0 win over the Atlanta Braves.

Hammel was on for a no-hitter until Jason Heyward's two-out single in the seventh. He walked two and struck out eight.

Brian Roberts led the offence with three RBI on two hits.

Ervin Santana matched Hammel with a one-hitter of his own in the Los Angeles Angels' 2-0 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks.

The Diamondbacks' hit also came with two outs in the seventh on Justin Upton's single.

Santana, who walked one and fanned five, got support from Mark Trumbo's two-run homer in the first.

The New York Yankees stretched their winning streak to eight, but they needed 14 innings to earn a 5-3 victory over the luckless Washington Nationals.

Mark Teixeira's two run-double in the top of the 14th proved the difference.

The loss was hard on the Nationals, who had taken the game into extras on the back of Ian Desmond's game-tying solo shot in the eighth.

Miami and Tampa Bay went even further, slugging it out over 15 innings before the Marlins inflicted a 4-3 defeat on the Rays.

Scott Cousins drove in the go-ahead run with a triple.

Ryan Braun hit two home runs, his 18th and 19th of the season, lifting the Milwaukee Brewers to a 6-2 victory over the Minnesota Twins.

Jarrod Saltalamacchia produced the big hit of the night for Boston, belting a two-run homer in the fourth to help the Red Sox beat the Chicago Cubs 4-3.

Homer Bailey tossed eight frames of one-run ball as the Cincinnati Reds made it five straight wins by beating the New York Mets 4-1.

Rajai Davis delivered a walk-off RBI single in the 10th, capping a come-from-behind 6-5 victory for the Toronto Blue Jays over the Philadelphia Phillies.

Justin Grimm got the win on his big-league debut, allowing three runs and striking out seven in six innings in an 8-3 Texas Rangers win over the Houston Astros.

Matt Holliday paced the St Louis offence with five RBI and Yadier Molina drove in four, with both men homering, as the Cardinals beat the Kansas City Royals 10-7.

A pinch-hit home run from Jonny Gomes helped the Oakland Athletics to their fifth win in a row, 6-4 over the San Diego Padres.

Tim Lincecum's struggles continued as he surrendered five runs in five innings as the San Francisco Giants lost 7-4 to the Seattle Mariners, while the Chicago White Sox beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 5-4.

The Detroit Tigers beat the Colorado Rockies 4-1 and the Pittsburgh Pirates were 9-2 winners over the Cleveland Indians.

Top financial tips for graduates

Araminta Robertson, of the Financially Mint blog, shares her financial advice for university leavers:

1. Build digital or technical skills: After graduation, people can find it extremely hard to find jobs. From programming to digital marketing, your early twenties are for building skills. Future employers will want people with tech skills.

2. Side hustle: At 16, I lived in a village and started teaching online, as well as doing work as a virtual assistant and marketer. There are six skills you can use online: translation; teaching; programming; digital marketing; design and writing. If you master two, you’ll always be able to make money.

3. Networking: Knowing how to make connections is extremely useful. Use LinkedIn to find people who have the job you want, connect and ask to meet for coffee. Ask how they did it and if they know anyone who can help you. I secured quite a few clients this way.

4. Pay yourself first: The minute you receive any income, put about 15 per cent aside into a savings account you won’t touch, to go towards your emergency fund or to start investing. I do 20 per cent. It helped me start saving immediately.
