Baltimore's 6-1 win on Friday night had seen them close the gap to two games, but the home side bounced back in the Bronx with three runs in the seventh inning.
The Yankees won for only the fourth time in 11 games, while the Orioles lost a contest decided by one run for the first time in 14 games.
The only bad news for the Yankees was a hamstring injury to Curtis Granderson, who left the game after two innings and was taken to hospital for a precautionary MRI.
The Tampa Bay Rays are a game and a half behind the Orioles after beating the Toronto Blue Jays 5-4.
In the AL Central, the Detroit Tigers pulled within a game of first place with a 5-1 victory over the Chicago White Sox.
Detroit have taken the first two games of the series and will field star pitcher Justin Verlander on Sunday to try for a sweep.
