Minnows Masafi stun Cup specialists Sharjah

The most decorated club in the 35-year history of the President's Cup crashed out in the first round at the hands of the Division One side on penalties.

Sharjah, the most decorated club in the 35-year history of the President's Cup, crashed out in the first round of the domestic tournament at the hands of Division One Masafi. A penalty by Masafi's Mohammed Kassed in the sixth minute was offset by a strike by Sharjah's Robert Luciano Brito in the 45th minute, and the clubs went to a penalty shoot-out that Masafi won 4-3 on Monday.

The Masafi club are from the small town of the same name, located in the Hajar Mountains. Masafi stood seventh in their lower-division table before springing a surprise on Sharjah, eight-time winners of the annual competition now known as the President's Cup. Sharjah were not the only Pro League club to be humbled by a Division One opponent on Monday as the 30-club tournament for the nation's top sides began.

Dabba al Fujairah ousted the promoted Dubai club 2-1 thanks to a 90th-minute goal by Diego. Yazid Kaissi had scored in the 45th minute to give Dubai, who are bottom of the Pro League table, a 1-0 lead. Other Pro League teams had little or no trouble dispatching their first-round opponents. Al Wasl thrashed Al Taawon 8-0 as Rashid Essa and Abdulrahman Kolfan each scored twice; Al Jazira delighted their coach, Abel Braga, with a 7-0 thrashing of Ras al Khaimah, with the previously barren Brazilian striker Bare scoring twice; and Al Dhafra scored five goals after two of their players were sent off on the way to a 6-0 victory over the Sharjah enclave of Dibba al Hisn. Abbas Lawal opened the scoring for Dhafra with a goal in the second minute but was sent off in the fifth, followed by Tafiq al Razak in the 31st minute.

Omar Abdulrahman scored in the 24th minute to launch Al Ain to a 5-0 jog past Masfut of Ajman. The Garden City side trail only Sharjah in President's Cup titles, with seven. Al Ahli took advantage of penalties by Mohammed Qassim and Faisal Khalil to roll past Al Rams of RAK 4-0. Ahli played without Fabio Cannavaro, suspended for the match because of accumulated cautions during the Pro League season.

In meetings involving only lower-division sides, Tarek Bilal, Mohammed Saleh and Tariq Darwish scored for Al Quwwat al Musallaha as they defeated Al Jazira al Hamra 3-1, and Ajman, relegated from the Pro League last season, overpowered Hatta 9-1 as Papa Georges scored three goals in the first 32 minutes and Abdullah Salem and Mohammed Zahran each added two. In the round of 16 on February 9, Masafi will try for another shock, this time against Al Ain, and Al Quwwat al Musallaha will face Al Wasl.

Al Wahda, the Pro League champions, and Emirates, the defending President's Cup champions, each received byes into the round of 16. All matches are played at neutral venues. In matches last night, Ismael Bangoura scored twice as Al Nasr shook free from a 2-2 draw at half time to defeat Division One Al Arabi, and Al Oruba overcame a deficit after the first half to oust Al Fujairah 2-1. In last night's games Kalba's shock 4-2 defeat to Al Thaid made them the third Pro League club to be eliminated by Division One opposition. Financial considerations before buying a property

Buyers should try to pay as much in cash as possible for a property, limiting the mortgage value to as little as they can afford. Mercer, the investment consulting arm of US services company Marsh & McLennan, expects its wealth division to at least double its assets under management (AUM) in the Middle East as wealth in the region continues to grow despite economic headwinds, a company official said.

Mercer Wealth, which globally has $160 billion in AUM, plans to boost its AUM in the region to $2-$3bn in the next 2-3 years from the present $1bn, said Yasir AbuShaban, a Dubai-based principal with Mercer Wealth.

“Within the next two to three years, we are looking at reaching $2 to $3 billion as a conservative estimate and we do see an opportunity to do so,” said Mr AbuShaban.

Mercer does not directly make investments, but allocates clients’ money they have discretion to, to professional asset managers. They also provide advice to clients.

“We have buying power. We can negotiate on their (client’s) behalf with asset managers to provide them lower fees than they otherwise would have to get on their own,” he added.

Mercer Wealth’s clients include sovereign wealth funds, family offices, and insurance companies among others.

From its office in Dubai, Mercer also looks after Africa, India and Turkey, where they also see opportunity for growth.

Wealth creation in Middle East and Africa (MEA) grew 8.5 per cent to $8.1 trillion last year from $7.5tn in 2015, higher than last year’s global average of 6 per cent and the second-highest growth in a region after Asia-Pacific which grew 9.9 per cent, according to consultancy Boston Consulting Group (BCG). In the region, where wealth grew just 1.9 per cent in 2015 compared with 2014, a pickup in oil prices has helped in wealth generation.

BCG is forecasting MEA wealth will rise to $12tn by 2021, growing at an annual average of 8 per cent.

Drivers of wealth generation in the region will be split evenly between new wealth creation and growth of performance of existing assets, according to BCG.

Another general trend in the region is clients’ looking for a comprehensive approach to investing, according to Mr AbuShaban.

“Institutional investors or some of the families are seeing a slowdown in the available capital they have to invest and in that sense they are looking at optimizing the way they manage their portfolios and making sure they are not investing haphazardly and different parts of their investment are working together,” said Mr AbuShaban.

Some clients also have a higher appetite for risk, given the low interest-rate environment that does not provide enough yield for some institutional investors. These clients are keen to invest in illiquid assets, such as private equity and infrastructure.

“What we have seen is a desire for higher returns in what has been a low-return environment specifically in various fixed income or bonds,” he said.

“In this environment, we have seen a de facto increase in the risk that clients are taking in things like illiquid investments, private equity investments, infrastructure and private debt, those kind of investments were higher illiquidity results in incrementally higher returns.”

The Abu Dhabi Investment Authority, one of the largest sovereign wealth funds, said in its 2016 report that has gradually increased its exposure in direct private equity and private credit transactions, mainly in Asian markets and especially in China and India. The authority’s private equity department focused on structured equities owing to “their defensive characteristics.”

Here, Dr Mohamed El Abiary, paediatric consultant at Al Zahra Hospital Dubai, shares some advice for parents whose children are fasting during the holy month of Ramadan:

Gradual fasting and golden points - For children under the age of 10, follow a step-by-step approach to fasting and don't push them beyond their limits. Start with a few hours fasting a day and increase it to a half fast and full fast when the child is ready. Every individual's ability varies as per the age and personal readiness. You could introduce a points system that awards the child and offers them encouragement when they make progress with the amount of hours they fast

Why fast? - Explain to your child why they are fasting. By shedding light on the importance of abstaining from food and drink, children may feel more encouraged to give it there all during the observance period. It is also a good opportunity to teach children about controlling urges, doing good for others and instilling healthy food habits

Sleep and suhoor - A child needs adequate sleep every night - at least eight hours. Make sure to set a routine early bedtime so he/she has sufficient time to wake up for suhoor, which is an essential meal at the beginning of the day

Good diet - Nutritious food is crucial to ensuring a healthy Ramadan for children. They must refrain from eating too much junk food as well as canned goods and snacks and drinks high in sugar. Foods that are rich in nutrients, vitamins and proteins, like fruits, fresh meats and vegetables, make for a good balanced diet

“The biggest mistake people make is they panic when they see a bee. They are small but smart creatures. If you move your hand quickly to hit the bees, this is an aggressive action and bees will defend themselves. They can sense the adrenalin in our body. But if we are calm, they are move away.”

Your rights as an employee

The government has taken an increasingly tough line against companies that fail to pay employees on time. Three years ago, the Cabinet passed a decree allowing the government to halt the granting of work permits to companies with wage backlogs.

The new measures passed by the Cabinet in 2016 were an update to the Wage Protection System, which is in place to track whether a company pays its employees on time or not.

If wages are 10 days late, the new measures kick in and the company is alerted it is in breach of labour rules. If wages remain unpaid for a total of 16 days, the authorities can cancel work permits, effectively shutting off operations. Fines of up to Dh5,000 per unpaid employee follow after 60 days.

Despite those measures, late payments remain an issue, particularly in the construction sector. Smaller contractors, such as electrical, plumbing and fit-out businesses, often blame the bigger companies that hire them for wages being late.

The authorities have urged employees to report their companies at the labour ministry or Tawafuq service centres — there are 15 in Abu Dhabi.

What is a calorie?
