Meydan hosts annual horse sale

DUBAI // Buyers from across the Gulf are expected to descend on the annual Horses in Training Sale to be held at Meydan Racecourse on Wednesday. With horses from both the Dubai Winter Racing Challenge and the recently-concluded Dubai International Racing Carnival in the sales book, Emirates Racing Authority (ERA) steward, Gerard Bush said that there was something for everyone. "We are expecting interest from Oman, Bahrain, Qatar and Saudi Arabia and we also find that buyers from places like Iran also look to the sale in order to supplement their bloodlines at stud," said Bush of the sale, which has now been run for seven years. "There are horses that you would see compete during the domestic season as well as runners from this year's Carnival, so we have a nice balance." More than 80 entries have been registered for the sale with most purchases heading for domestic seasons in other Gulf countries. Among the drafts are horses from the highly-regarded yard of South African, Mike de Kock, including Silver Mist, winner of the 2009 Group Three Al Rashidiya Carnival race. De Kock's former Aidan O'Brien Group One performer, Red Rock Canyon, who is currently co-owned by England cricket star, Andrew Flintoff and professional golfer, Lee Westwood, was also on the list yesterday. Also of interest to international buyers may be Blackat Blackitten, from the yard of Erwan Charpy, who was runner-up in the Burj Nahaar in 2008. A long contingent of horses from champion trainer, Doug Watson, who is currently vying with Ali Rashid al Raihe for the domestic-season crown, is also up for sale. "We have seen in the past that bargains can be found at the sale," said Bush. The event will be held in the saddling enclosure at Meydan Racecourse at 5pm.
