Everton earned their first win of the 2015/16 Premier League season in style, winning 3-0 at Southampton on Saturday.
St Mary’s Stadium had been a site of frequent frustration for Everton. They were winless in their previous six visits to the south coast, drawing twice and losing four times, and they had returned to Merseyside without even a goal in their past three visits.
That streak ended after 22 minutes on Saturday as Romelu Lukaku finished off a flowing counter-attack, nodding in a cross from Arouna Kone. The Belgian doubled the lead on 45 minutes with a one-time finish after being set up by Ross Barkley.
Lukaku’s second goal gave him 43 in the Premier League for his career, making him the highest-scoring Belgian in Premier League history. He passed new Liverpool signing Christian Benteke.
Barkley scored his second goal in two league games with six minutes remaining, a relatively simple finish from Seamus Coleman’s pass.
