The Boston Red Sox clinched the American League wild-card spot despite suffering an 8-7 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays on Tuesday. The Red Sox needed a win or a Texas loss to take the play-off berth and when the Rangers were beaten 5-2 by the Los Angeles Angels, Boston sealed a sixth post-seasons appearance in seven years.
"Even not winning this game tonight, you still move into the play-offs, so it's a celebration," said David Ortiz, the Red Sox designated-hitter, "We're in this situation because we've done better in the regular season and we've worked our way to get here." Boston will meet the Angels in the American League Divisional Series for the third straight year, having eliminated them from the play-offs in two straight seasons.
The Red Sox fell in the AL Championship Series to the Tampa Bay Rays a year ago after capturing the World Series in 2007. Despite qualifying for the playoffs, Boston are suffering a poor run of form with seven defeats - five of them in succession - in the past nine games. The Detroit Tigers and Minnesota Twins had to share the spoils in their fight for the American League Central title as they won one apiece in their double- header.
The Twins won the first game 3-2 to move within one game of the Tigers. Brandon Lyon threw two wild pitches in a row after Denard Span's single, allowing Span to score on Orlando Cabrera's single in a two-run 10th. But Detroit hit back to reclaim their two-game cushion with a 6-5 win in the second game as Miguel Cabrera and Curtis Granderson hit their 33rd and 30th homers respectively. "This is play-off baseball - we just got started a little early this year," said the Minnesota manager, Ron Gardenhire.
Ken Griffey Jr scored a homer as the Seattle Mariners won 6-4 at home to the Oakland Athletics. The AL East winners, the New York Yankees, had a 4-3 win over the Kansas City Royals, while pitcher Wade Davis conceded one run in seven innings as the Tampa Bay Rays beat the Baltimore Orioles 3-1. In the National League, the Los Angeles Dodgers kept their celebrations on hold after a 3-1 defeat by the San Diego Padres stopped them from clinching the West Division title.
Second-placed Colorado Rockies beat the Milwaukee Brewers 7-5 in 11 innings to ensure the Dodgers' wait continues. The Philadelphia Phillies produced a 7-4 win over the Houston Astros as they chase a third successive NL East title. The Washington Nationals won 4-3 against the visiting New York Mets, while Jay Bruce smashed two homers and drove in five in a 7-2 win for the Cincinnati Reds over the St Louis Cardinals.
The Chicago Cubs were 6-0 winners over the Pittsburgh Pirates, and Chris Coghlan was the Florida Marlins' hero as he doubled and produced the winning run in the seventh in a 5-4 victory over the Atlanta Braves. What drives subscription retailing?
Once the domain of newspaper home deliveries, subscription model retailing has combined with e-commerce to permeate myriad products and services.
The concept has grown tremendously around the world and is forecast to thrive further, according to UnivDatos Market Insights’ report on recent and predicted trends in the sector.
The global subscription e-commerce market was valued at $13.2 billion (Dh48.5bn) in 2018. It is forecast to touch $478.2bn in 2025, and include the entertainment, fitness, food, cosmetics, baby care and fashion sectors.
The report says subscription-based services currently constitute “a small trend within e-commerce”. The US hosts almost 70 per cent of recurring plan firms, including leaders Dollar Shave Club, Hello Fresh and Netflix. Walmart and Sephora are among longer established retailers entering the space.
UnivDatos cites younger and affluent urbanites as prime subscription targets, with women currently the largest share of end-users.
That’s expected to remain unchanged until 2025, when women will represent a $246.6bn market share, owing to increasing numbers of start-ups targeting women.
Personal care and beauty occupy the largest chunk of the worldwide subscription e-commerce market, with changing lifestyles, work schedules, customisation and convenience among the chief future drivers.

One in four Americans don't plan to retire
Nearly a quarter of Americans say they never plan to retire, according to a poll that suggests a disconnection between individuals' retirement plans and the realities of ageing in the workforce.
Experts say illness, injury, layoffs and caregiving responsibilities often force older workers to leave their jobs sooner than they'd like.
According to the poll from The Associated Press-NORC Centre for Public Affairs Research, 23 per cent of workers, including nearly two in 10 of those over 50, don't expect to stop working. Roughly another quarter of Americans say they will continue working beyond their 65th birthday.
According to government data, about one in five people 65 and older was working or actively looking for a job in June. The study surveyed 1,423 adults in February this year.
For many, money has a lot to do with the decision to keep working.
"The average retirement age that we see in the data has gone up a little bit, but it hasn't gone up that much," says Anqi Chen, assistant director of savings research at the Centre for Retirement Research at Boston College. "So people have to live in retirement much longer, and they may not have enough assets to support themselves in retirement."
When asked how financially comfortable they feel about retirement, 14 per cent of Americans under the age of 50 and 29 per cent over 50 say they feel extremely or very prepared, according to the poll. About another four in 10 older adults say they do feel somewhat prepared, while just about one-third feel unprepared.
"One of the things about thinking about never retiring is that you didn't save a whole lot of money," says Ronni Bennett, 78, who was pushed out of her job as a New York City-based website editor at 63.
She searched for work in the immediate aftermath of her layoff, a process she describes as akin to "banging my head against a wall." Finding Manhattan too expensive without a steady stream of income, she eventually moved to Portland, Maine. A few years later, she moved again, to Lake Oswego, Oregon. "Sometimes I fantasise that if I win the lottery, I'd go back to New York," says Ms Bennett.
