Two weeks can be a long time in Formula One, and Lewis Hamilton underlined that on Saturday in Montreal with a strong performance to take pole position for Sunday’s Canadian Grand Prix.
The triple world champion had one of his weakest displays in recent years in Monaco, where set-up problems left him only 14th quickest in qualifying.
He could only recover to be seventh in the race.
On Saturday at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, there was no repeat of those issues as a lap of 1 minute, 11.459 seconds gave him the 65th pole of his career.
The Mercedes-GP driver has won five times in Montreal before, including the past two years, and he will be confident of repeating that feat on Sunday and cutting championship leader Sebastian Vettel’s 25-point lead at the top of the drivers’ standings.
Vettel, who has yet to finish outside the top two in a race this season, was second fastest, 0.330 seconds slower than his title rival.
The second Mercedes of Valtteri Bottas was third, ahead of Kimi Raikkonen’s Ferrari, with the two Red Bull Racing cars of Max Verstappen and Daniel Ricciardo completing the top six on the grid for the race that begins at 10pm UAE time.
Farther down the grid, it was a reality check for Fernando Alonso as the double world champion could only qualify 12th in his McLaren.
The Spaniard had missed the previous race in Monaco as he took part in the Indianapolis 500 in the United States, where he had been fifth in qualifying and had led at one stage before an engine failure curtailed his hopes of winning the IndyCar event.
Back in F1, Alonso was limited by the lack of power in his McLaren’s Honda engine and was eliminated in the second part of qualifying.
Another driver to have a disappointing day was Canadian Lance Stroll, who was only 17th in his Mercedes-powered Williams in his home race.
To rub salt into the wound for the 18 year old, his Williams teammate Felipe Massa was seventh fastest, with his best qualifying time 1.3 seconds faster than what Stroll could muster.

How to join and use Abu Dhabi’s public libraries
• There are six libraries in Abu Dhabi emirate run by the Department of Culture and Tourism, including one in Al Ain and Al Dhafra.
• Libraries are free to visit and visitors can consult books, use online resources and study there. Most are open from 8am to 8pm on weekdays, closed on Fridays and have variable hours on Saturdays, except for Qasr Al Watan which is open from 10am to 8pm every day.
• In order to borrow books, visitors must join the service by providing a passport photograph, Emirates ID and a refundable deposit of Dh400. Members can borrow five books for three weeks, all of which are renewable up to two times online.
• If users do not wish to pay the fee, they can still use the library’s electronic resources for free by simply registering on the website. Once registered, a username and password is provided, allowing remote access.

SUNDERLAND 2002-03
No one has ended a Premier League season quite like Sunderland. They lost each of their final 15 games, taking no points after January. They ended up with 19 in total, sacking managers Peter Reid and Howard Wilkinson and losing 3-1 to Charlton when they scored three own goals in eight minutes.
SUNDERLAND 2005-06
Until Derby came along, Sunderland’s total of 15 points was the Premier League’s record low. They made it until May and their final home game before winning at the Stadium of Light while they lost a joint record 29 of their 38 league games.
HUDDERSFIELD 2018-19
Joined Derby as the only team to be relegated in March. No striker scored until January, while only two players got more assists than goalkeeper Jonas Lossl. The mid-season appointment Jan Siewert was to end his time as Huddersfield manager with a 5.3 per cent win rate.
ASTON VILLA 2015-16
Perhaps the most inexplicably bad season, considering they signed Idrissa Gueye and Adama Traore and still only got 17 points. Villa won their first league game, but none of the next 19. They ended an abominable campaign by taking one point from the last 39 available.
FULHAM 2018-19
Terrible in different ways. Fulham’s total of 26 points is not among the lowest ever but they contrived to get relegated after spending over £100 million (Dh457m) in the transfer market. Much of it went on defenders but they only kept two clean sheets in their first 33 games.
