Jorginho says he has not talked to Dunga or Brazil FA and will stay with Al Wasl

DUBAI // Jorginho has pledged his immediate future to Al Wasl, putting an end to speculation he is returning to the Brazilian national team.

The new Wasl manager, whose appointment was announced in April, had been linked with reprising his role as Brazil's assistant coach following the confirmation on Tuesday of Dunga as manager.

Dunga and Jorginho formed Brazil’s No 1 and No 2 from 2006 to 2010, guiding the Selecao through to the quarter-finals at the World Cup in South Africa four years ago.

During their tenure Brazil were crowned champions at the 2007 Copa America.

They also secured the 2009 Confederations Cup.

As teammates Dunga and Jorginho combined to help Brazil clinch a fourth global title at the 1994 World Cup.

So a possible reunion was mooted, despite Jorginho assuming his role as Wasl coach only last week.

The former defender, who signed a one-year contract with the Arabian Gulf League club, has been charged with turning around Wasl's fortunes.

Last season, they finished one place above the relegation zone.

Following training on Tuesday, the latest coach reiterated his commitment to the club.

“Jorginho is staying,” Wasl team manager Majed Obaidallah said.

“We spoke to him now, and he said he’d not had any contact with Dunga or the Brazilian FA.

“And he assured me that, even if he did, he would tell them his job is here with Al Wasl.

“We are very happy, obviously, because we chose him and we want him to stay. He has begun working with the players and is putting his philosophy to them. We are looking forward to the season.”

However, the make-up of Wasl's foreign contingent for the 2014/15 campaign is still to be finalised with the club in the market for perhaps two more players.

They have yet to make a decision on whether to retain Ricardo Oliveira, the Brazilian striker signed in January from Al Jazira.

Oliveira is wanted by Palmeiras, a club based in his home city of Sao Paulo, and Wasl seem open to the transfer.

That would free up another expatriate spot with Fabio Virginio de Lima, the Brazilian playmaker, this week joining at the Zabeel Stadium compatriot Neto Berola, the striker recruited last month.

As for new signings, Obaidallah said Wasl are seeking a second striker and a winger.

“There is nothing done yet, but we are in no hurry to sign them,” Obaidallah said. “We have to make sure we get the right players for Al Wasl.”
