PORTSMOUTH // David James marked a new Premier League appearance record with a clean sheet as Portsmouth claimed a vital win over Manchester City at Fratton Park.
Eclipsing Gary Speed's previous mark by making his 536th top-flight appearance, James kept City's array of attacking talent at bay in Pompey's first game since Tony Adams was sacked.
And it was two defenders, Glen Johnson and Hermann Hreidarsson, who scored the goals to ensure Paul Hart's reign as caretaker manager got off to a winning start.
Although all eyes were on James, it was opposite number Shay Given who had more to do in the first period.
The Pompey finishing was less impressive though, with David Nugent and Peter Crouch both spurning good opportunities.
City's only chance of note came on 22 minutes when Robinho curled a shot over the crossbar.
Despite the rich assortment of attacking players on view, it was Johnson, the right-back, who broke the deadlock with a fine goal on 70 minutes
Hreidarsson then made the game safe five minutes later with a towering header.
The win overshadowed the news that Peter Storrie, the Portsmouth executive chairman, had been re-arrested as part of the probe into alleged football corruption.
Storrie, who was arrested in November 2007 on suspicion of conspiracy to defraud and false accounting, was questioned on a "tax issue" in London on Friday but denies any wrong-doing and was not charged, a club spokesman said.
