Mark Webber, Red Bull Racing, Australia. Webber's final season in F1 before he heads to endurance racing will be remembered for the Malaysia controversy, when he lost out to Vettel. But despite the occasional great drive, such as finishing second in both Britain and Japan, he has been comprehensively put in the shade by Vettel this year. Srdjan Suki / EPA

Fernando Alonso, Ferrari, Spain. Dominated in both China and Spain and usually has been strong on race day. The problem of poor qualifying continues to hurt him, with the Spaniard too often left with too much to do in the race after starting too far back on the grid. Felipe Massa, Ferrari, Brazil. A frustrating season again as he showed glimpses of great pace on occasions, but struggled to match Alonso consistently. A crash in Monaco and a spin at the Nurburgring prompted Ferrari to bring in Kimi Raikkonen to replace him for next year, leaving the Brazilian without a drive. Manan Vatsyayana / AFP

Jenson Button, McLaren-Mercedes, Great Britain. The 2009 world champion has done the best he can with poor equipment, but apart from strategy gambles has rarely been a factor at the front. After initially being matched by his younger teammate, has consistently done the better job in the second half of the season. Ahmad Masood / Reuters

Sergio Perez, McLaren-Mercedes, Mexico. A very mixed first year with McLaren. Drew the wrath of a number of his rivals, including Button, with his aggressive, wheel-to-wheel racing, but his willingness to try overtaking manoeuvres has been admirable, if ultimately misguided, on occasions. Kimi Raikkonen, Lotus, Finland. Last year's winner at Yas Marina Circuit was a title contender in the first half of the season as he won in Australia and consistently scored well. But since the mid-season break his form has dipped and he will hope for better at Ferrari next season. Patrik Stollarz / AFP

Romain Grosjean, Lotus, France. After a crash-heavy 2012 the Frenchman has dialled back the aggression and has made fewer errors. Was outshone by Raikkonen earlier in 2013, but has raised his game in the second half of the campaign and has been a genuine contender for victory in four races. Prakash Sing / AFP

Nico Rosberg, Mercedes-GP, Germany. In terms of points, he has been well beaten by his teammate. But he has more than held his own against the 2008 world champion, winning twice, with his success in Monte Carlo, where he paced himself perfectly, highlighting his all-around ability. Mark Baker / AP

Lewis Hamilton, Mercedes-GP, Great Britain. A victory and five poles in his first year with his new team is more than the 2008 world champion was expecting. His victory hopes have diminished as Red Bull have improved, but his form in qualifying means he will be a threat for pole this weekend. Clive Mason / Getty Images

Nico Hulkenberg, Sauber, Germany. For much of the season had looked as if his move from Force India had been a mistake. But finally with a decent car beneath him the German has shown what he can do with fourth in Korea and fifth in Italy being two of the best drives of the season. Anindito Mukherjee / Reuters

Esteban Gutierrez, Sauber, Mexico. A tough test for any rookie, learning in a mediocre car. Has put in a solid effort, though he has been unable to match the more experienced Hulkenberg. Scored the first points of his career with an impressive drive to seventh in Japan. Mark Baker / AP

Paul di Resta, Force India, Great Britain. Running third for much of the race in Bahrain and almost taking pole in Belgium showed what the Briton is capable of. Some bad luck in qualifying has also hurt his chances to shine, and he needs a good end to the year to guarantee his spot on the grid for 2014. Jeon Heon-Kyun / EPA

Adrian Sutil, Force India, Germany. Made an immediate impact in his first race back after a year out as he led in Australia for a period. Has had a solid season, but Di Resta has usually had a slight edge on speed, and the German will do well to still be in the series next year. Diego Azubel / EPA

Pastor Maldonado, Williams, Venezuela. It has been another season of some good speed mixed with some crashes and silly mistakes along the way. The 10th-place finish at the Hungarian Grand Prix in August remains the team's only scoring effort of the season. Adnan Abidi / Reuters

Valtteri Bottas, Williams, Finland. Had impressed the team as a test driver before being promoted to the race team this year. No points to his name, but has made few mistakes, and put in one of the qualifying laps of the season to be the third quickest at a damp Montreal in Canada in June. Srdjan Suki / EPA

Jean Eric-Vergne, Scuderia Toro Rosso, France. Has proven a good foil for his teammate Ricciardo in the races, but has often struggled in qualifying, making the top 10 only three times. Daniel Ricciardo, Scuderia Toro Rosso, Australia. Some brilliant qualifying efforts - he has five times started in the topo eight - helped persuade Red Bull to sign him for 2014 to replace Webber. Has done a good job but will need to raise consistency when he is alongside Vettel next year at the front of the grid. Ahmad Masood / Reuters

Charles Pic, Caterham, France. Rewarded with a marginally faster car after joining from Marussia but yet to score a championship point. When allowed, has been able to mix it with the Williams and the Saubers, but as a whole has had to settle for being the best of the backmarkers. Ahmad Masood / Reuters

Giedo van der Garde, Caterham, Netherlands. Was harshly described as a "pay driver with no mirrors" by Mark Webber after he had made contact with the Red Bull in Canada. Has got better as the season went on, matching Pic more, and qualifying 15th in Belgium was a great achievement. Ahmad Masood / Reuters

Jules Bianchi, Marussia, France. Impressed in the early races with his speed and race craft, putting the car in positions it really had no right to be. Chances to shine have decreased as the car performance has regressed and will hope for better after committing to another year with the team. Greg Wood / AFP

Max Chilton, Marussia, Great Britain. Has not really done anything wrong in his debut season, but has been unfortunate enough to be completely overshadowed by Bianchi in the same equipment. Out-qualifying Bianchi by more than half-a-second in Japan showed there is speed there, though. Steve Crisp / Reuters
