Hosts China beat Sweden

TIANJIN // Han Duan scored her 101st goal as hosts China celebrated the start of competition at the Beijing Olympics with a 2-1 victory over Sweden. Han's goal in the 72nd minute sparked an eruption by the boisterous crowd of 37,902 at Tianjin Olympic Sports Center Stadium, and started a parade of about 30 flag-waving Chinese fans around the lower level of the ground. After a frenetic first half, the game settled down in the second 45 minutes and seemed to be heading for a draw. Lotta Schelin finished a rapid counter in the 38th minute with a class finish, equalising for Sweden after a sixth-minute strike by Xu Yuan had put the hosts ahead. *AP

Electoral College Victory

Trump has so far secured 295 Electoral College votes, according to the Associated Press, exceeding the 270 needed to win. Only Nevada and Arizona remain to be called, and both swing states are leaning Republican. Trump swept all five remaining swing states, North Carolina, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin, sealing his path to victory and giving him a strong mandate.

Popular Vote Tally

The count is ongoing, but Trump currently leads with nearly 51 per cent of the popular vote to Harris’s 47.6 per cent. Trump has over 72.2 million votes, while Harris trails with approximately 67.4 million.
