Phoenix Thoroughbreds takes first Group 1 win at Ascot with Advertise

Advertise bounced back from a poor 2000 Guineas performance

Advertise provided Dubai’s Phoenix Thoroughbreds with their first Group 1 success at the royal meeting.

The Martyn Meade-trained showcasing colt made smooth headway under the in-form jockey Frankie Dettori to clinch the Commonwealth Cup on the penultimate day of the festival at Ascot on Friday.

Forever In Dreams in the silks of Phoenix Ladies Syndicate and Jaber Abdullah’s Hello Youmzain completed a superb 1-2-3 sweep for the Dubai owners.

Fitted with first time blinkers and returning to the six-furlong trip on which he has been successful three times before, Advertise was bouncing back from a disappointing 2000 Guineas.

“I think we have to put the Guineas behind us,” said Meade. “He wasn't quite right on that day, clearly, and we wanted to see if he got the mile, but we never found out as he never ran any sort of race.

“I thought we would go back where he is now over six furlongs, where he was pretty special last year.

“I trained him for a mile, getting him switched off, and I suddenly thought, 'how do I jazz him up again?' So, we put the blinds on and luckily, that did the job today.

“He jumped and clearly that demonstrates that is his distance. If we can step him up a little bit, we clearly will. It was just lucky that Frankie was able to ride him as that made a huge difference.”

The win on board Advertise was Dettori’s seventh winner in the royal meeting after the Italian racked up a four-timer on the previous day.

“I'm so pleased for Martyn,” added Dettori. “His horses were sick in the spring and this horse ran badly in the Guineas.

“He had to bite the bullet and close his stables for a month and he's got his reward. I'm so pleased for the horse and his connections. It's been an unbelievable week.”

Amer Abdulaziz, chief executive officer of Phoenix Thoroughbred, added: “It's a beautiful day; it couldn't get better. This is great – awesome.

“We knew the horse was doing great and he was working well and the trainer was happy with him.

“To have him win like that was amazing. Winning at Royal Ascot means a lot. There is nothing like this.”
