DUBAI // The teenager Daniel Hendry produced the best round of his career, matching the course record, to win the Sheikh Rashid Trophy on Saturday.
"This is the first time I have shot a bogey-free round and that's icing on the cake," said Hendry, 17, after receiving the winner's trophy from Sheikh Fahim bin Sultan Al Qasimi, chairman of the Emirates Golf Federation, at Jebel Ali Golf Resort and Spa.
The youngster from the Emirates Golf Club shot a 69 for a three-under 213 in the 54-hole event, beating his nearest challenger, Michael Harradine, by four shots.
Hendry's playing partner, Craig Marchbank, also of Scotland, finished third on six over.
Hendry's 69 equalled the course record set by Nasser Yacoob of Bahrain during the 1999 GCC championship at the Peter Harradine-designed course.
"I was pretty nervous at the start, but a steady par calmed my nerves and thereafter things fell in places. I made some solid pars besides those three birdies," Hendry said.
He said he has no intention of turning pro. "I may think about it once I finish by four-year graduation course in the United States."
