ST LOUIS, Missouri // The Colombian Camilo Villegas took a one stroke lead over Jim Furyk in the BMW Championship today to move closer to his first PGA title. Level with Furyk at 12-under when play was halted yesterday due to bad light, Villegas returned to the Bellerive Golf Club early today to play his final five holes. Villegas, 26, took sole possession of top spot with a birdie at the eighth on his way to an error-free round of four-under 66 and a three-round total of 13-under 197.
It was the first time in his career that Villegas has held the 54-hole lead at a PGA Tour event. Furyk completed his third round on Saturday also for a 66. Americans Anthony Kim (66), Brian Gay (67) and South African Tim Clark (66) are four shots further back. Vijay Singh, who has one hand on the FedEx Cup trophy and the US$10 million (Dh36.7m) bonus that goes to the playoff champion after capturing the first two events of the series, has struggled in St Louis where he has yet to break par in three rounds and will start Sunday 14 shots behind the leader.
However, the Fijian's two biggest threats Sergio Garcia of Spain and Mike Weir of Canada are also well down the leaderboard. *Reuters
