Quiros looks to improve on Desert swing after Qatar and Dubai success

The Desert Classic winner wants to capitalise on his form and success formula with new caddie to win a major title.

CRAIL, Scotland // Alvaro Quiros's Dubai Desert Classic victory on Sunday was his fifth in as many seasons on the European Tour and the big-hitting Spaniard feels the time is right to carry his form into contention for a major.

Quiros continued a consistent run in Dubai after winning one tournament a year since becoming a full-time European Tour member in 2007.

However, the 28-year-old from Cadiz has never been able to replicate his best form in the major championships, managing to only make the halfway cut in two of the eight he has competed in since the 2009 US Masters.

"Winning a major is something very special for a few reasons," Quiros told reporters.

"One of the reasons is you have to be ready to be in contention with the best players in the world, and play good enough to let yourself be in contention. Luck is something also important.

"In my case, I'm pretty sure that I'm going to be in a good position to fight for a top-10 in the majors if I do my job properly.

"This is my target because as you can see, my numbers in the majors are really bad. I can't expect to win making just two cuts in eight. So, we will see."

Luck was very much on the Spaniard's side in Dubai, however, as he secured victory with one of the most bizarre final rounds in recent memory.

Quiros chipped in for an eagle on the second, had to seek medical treatment after a poor drive, took two unplayable penalty drops on the eighth, the second after his ball lodged in a palm tree, and recorded a hole-in-one on the 11th.

Helping Quiros's quest to join fellow Spaniards Seve Ballesteros and Jose Maria Olazabal as major champions is his decision to take on Angel Cabrera's former caddy.

"He caddied for Angel when he won at (the US Masters) Augusta," Quiros added of the Argentine two-time major champion.

"But Angel has a completely different style of golf. He draws the ball and I fade it. And in windy conditions, Cabrera plays in a different way than me. So it will take time for him to get to know my game fully.

"We've only been together for four weeks, so this is a good start with a second in Qatar and now a win in Dubai."
