Ahead of Saturday's Dubai World Cup, Godolphin America president Jimmy Bell explains how his organisation contributed to this year's Dubai World Cup Carnival and how they fit into the vision of Sheikh Mohammed for the organisation.
Opportunity
“When Meydan went to dirt we knew there would be an opportunity to go through our horses at Godolphin America to see which ones would work here.
“Kiaran McLaughlin [the race trainer] spent a lot of time over here and he learnt very well what horses can and cannot do here.”
Positive
“Kiaran has a great team here and we are trying to build upon that. Having them based at Marmoon has been a great success and the reviews from our guys about the track surfaces there have been nothing but positive.
“We are delighted by how the horses we have brought over have trained and how they have performed.”
Goal
“I wish we could have brought a lot more over and we are looking forward to bringing over more horses down the line.
“Our ultimate goal is to participate on World Cup night but obviously we have a lot of horses that would do quite well at Meydan and we hope to have a very good presence at the Carnival in the future.
Assignment
“I wish we could have brought a lot more over and we are looking forward to Part of our assignment is to sort out what type of horses go well at Meydan.
“We have Marking, who runs in the Godolphin Mile, Confrontation, who is in the Dubai Golden Shaheen and Frosted who is in the Dubai World Cup.
“I think they are all very live chances and I am very excited that we are bringing over horses like this.”
Motto
“I think you have seen what is in the works. This was directed and dedicated and a lot of times you shoot and you don’t hit the target.
“Sheikh Mohammed’s motto is to always learn and to try and if you are not learning you are probably not trying.”

Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD)
What is THAAD?
It is considered to be the US' most superior missile defence system.
Production:
It was first created in 2008.
Speed:
THAAD missiles can travel at over Mach 8, so fast that it is hypersonic.
Abilities:
THAAD is designed to take out projectiles, namely ballistic missiles, as they are on their downward trajectory towards their target, otherwise known as the "terminal phase".
Purpose:
To protect high-value strategic sites, such as airfields or population centres.
Range:
THAAD can target projectiles both inside and outside of the Earth's atmosphere, at an altitude of 93 miles above the Earth's surface.
Creators:
Lockheed Martin was originally granted the contract to develop the system in 1992. Defence company Raytheon sub-contracts to develop other major parts of the system, such as ground-based radar.
UAE and THAAD:
In 2011, the UAE became the first country outside of the US to buy two THAAD missile defence systems. It then deployed them in 2016, becoming the first Gulf country to do so.
