DALIAN // The double world champion Tyson Gay will prepare for his sprint battle with Usain Bolt and Asafa Powell in Beijing rather than flying onwards to the United States' training camp in Dalian. Gay, the world 100 metres and 200m champion, suffered a hamstring injury in the longer event at the US Olympic trials on July 5 and has spent much of the last month receiving treatment at the Munich clinic of German sport specialist Dr Hans-Wilhelm Muller-Wohlfahrt.
Gay, who will celebrate his 26th birthday on Saturday and is set to compete in his first Olympics, will look to conduct his final preparations for the eagerly anticipated 100m against the Jamaican duo at Beijing University, rather than travel to Dalian. It was expected Gay would travel to the Team USA camp, not only to train for his individual event, which begins on August 15, but also to practice with the 4x100m relay team.
However, a USA spokesman said: "His leg is fine now and he's had some great workouts before coming to Beijing where he wants to attend the opening ceremony on Friday night." Wallace Spearmon, who saw Gay when visiting the Muller-Wohlfahrt clinic for treatment last week, believes the Kentucky sprinter will be on top form when the racing commences. Spearmon, a hot tip for the 200m title, said: "I really don't know too much. That's between him and his doctor and his coach.
"All I know is what I've seen and when I saw him, he looked pretty good to me. "I think the fall probably looked worse than it actually was and I think he'll be ready to go. "Tyson Gay is not a person you count out so if he's in the race, I'd definitely consider him a threat." *PA
