LaDainian Tomlinson signed a two-year contract with the New York Jets on Sunday in a deal worth US$5million (Dh18.4m).
The 30-year-old running back, who was released after nine seasons with the San Diego Chargers, had visited several teams, including the Minnesota Vikings, before choosing the Jets.
His arrival will boost a Jets team who were the top-ranked rushing team in the league. The Jets, who reached the AFC championship game last season, recently released Thomas Jones, their long-time running back, .
Tomlinson will join Shonn Greene, the second-year running back, in their back field. Tomlinson rushed for 12,490 yards and 153 touchdowns, won two rushing titles and was named the NFL MVP in 2006 while with the Chargers.
Meanwhile, the Denver Broncos have acquired the quarterback Brady Quinn from the Cleveland Browns in exchange for the full-back, Peyton Hillis and the sixth-round pick in the 2011 draft.
Denver also said they had agreed to give the Browns a conditional 2012 draft pick for Quinn, a 25-year-old former first-round draft choice by the Browns.

Closing the loophole on sugary drinks
As The National reported last year, non-fizzy sugared drinks were not covered when the original tax was introduced in 2017. Sports drinks sold in supermarkets were found to contain, on average, 20 grams of sugar per 500ml bottle.
The non-fizzy drink AriZona Iced Tea contains 65 grams of sugar – about 16 teaspoons – per 680ml can. The average can costs about Dh6, which would rise to Dh9.
Drinks such as Starbucks Bottled Mocha Frappuccino contain 31g of sugar in 270ml, while Nescafe Mocha in a can contains 15.6g of sugar in a 240ml can.
Flavoured water, long-life fruit juice concentrates, pre-packaged sweetened coffee drinks fall under the ‘sweetened drink’ category
Not taxed:
Freshly squeezed fruit juices, ground coffee beans, tea leaves and pre-prepared flavoured milkshakes do not come under the ‘sweetened drink’ band.
