No manager in the world would be happy with an opening-day defeat but, despite his side’s 1-0 loss at Manchester United on Saturday, Tottenham Hotspur coach Mauricio Pochettino should not be too downbeat following a performance that contained plenty of positives.
Spurs began the game the livelier side on the pitch, Christian Eriksen and Harry Kane continuing from where they left off last season with some fine combination play.
Nacer Chadli also looked threatening on the right, while a defence that shipped 53 goals in 2014/15 — the fifth-worst mark in the division — appeared far more solid and sturdy in the opening stages, no doubt aided by the presence of newcomer Toby Alderweireld.
United did improve after Kyle Walker’s own goal gifted them a lead they barely deserved midway through the first half, but Tottenham continued to cause their esteemed opponents problems and did enough throughout the match to warrant at least a point. They may have departed Old Trafford with nothing to show for their efforts, but there were further signs of progress from which Pochettino can take solace.
Although the Argentine’s first campaign at the helm last time out was far from perfect, it must go down as an overall success.

Most Tottenham fans would have settled for a fifth-place finish 12 months ago, particularly when the squad needed to be reshaped as a new style of play was introduced and youngsters such as Kane and Nabil Bentaleb were promoted while remaining competitive on the pitch.
Spurs were rightly criticised, at times, with avoidable home defeats to the likes of Newcastle, West Bromwich Albion and Aston Villa turning out to be fatal in their pursuit of a top-four spot, but there were promising indicators that they had shed some of the flakiness traditionally associated with “typical Tottenham”. Pochettino’s outfit seemed to have a bit more steel; they won 17 points from losing positions and avoided defeat in 13 of their 19 Premier League away games.
It is a base from which they will hope to build this campaign. The ill-fated stream of purchases made with the money recouped from Gareth Bale’s switch to Real Madrid is now on the verge of being consigned to memory, with Paulinho, Roberto Soldado, Etienne Capoue and Vlad Chiriches either set to leave or having already departed White Hart Lane. All were brought in after Bale completed an £80 million (Dh457.9m) move to the Spanish side in the summer of 2013.
The current group is already beginning to look a lot more like Pochettino’s, a year or so on from his appointment.
The former Southampton manager favours an energetic and high-tempo pressing game, an approach that many players do not suit. Remodelling the squad to match his demands will take time, but progress has been made and Tottenham look in far better shape than they have done since a Bale-inspired side took them to the brink of the Uefa Champions League two seasons ago.
Nevertheless, a couple of additional signings would be welcome before the window closes. A designated holding midfielder would further bolster the defensive unit, while more pace in forward areas would add greater directness and penetration to Spurs’ play.
Saido Berahino, Clinton N’Jie and Javier Hernandez have been linked with moves in recent days, with all three attackers’ ability to stretch the play exactly what Tottenham need.
Kane usually has been fielded as a No 9 up to now, but the England international looks more of a natural second striker than a line-leader, able to drop deep and create as well as convert. With men regularly running in behind him, Kane, 21, could have more of an all-round impact this season, even if he is unlikely to match 2014/15’s 31-goal haul in all competitions.
Many positives can be taken from the club’s current situation. While the top four may again be just out of reach, there is no reason why the north Londoners cannot keep progressing: with a new stadium on the horizon and a talented manager encouraging attractive football from his young side, these are exciting times for Tottenham Hotspur.

Her Jazz Garden appearance is career highlight as she will use the event to perform the original song Big Blue Eyes, the single from her debut solo album, due for release soon.

Importantly, we intend to operate Careem independently, under the leadership of co-founder and current CEO Mudassir Sheikha. I’ve gotten to know both co-founders, Mudassir and Magnus Olsson, and what they have built is truly extraordinary. They are first-class entrepreneurs who share our platform vision and, like us, have launched a wide range of products—from digital payments to food delivery—to serve consumers.
I expect many of you will ask how we arrived at this structure, meaning allowing Careem to maintain an independent brand and operate separately. After careful consideration, we decided that this framework has the advantage of letting us build new products and try new ideas across not one, but two, strong brands, with strong operators within each. Chatham House Rule
A mark of Chatham House’s influence 100 years on since its founding, was Moscow’s formal declaration last month that it was an “undesirable
organisation”.
The depth of knowledge and academics that it drew on
following the Ukraine invasion had broadcast Mr Putin’s chicanery.
The institute is more used to accommodating world leaders,
with Nelson Mandela, Margaret Thatcher among those helping it provide
authoritative commentary on world events.
Chatham House was formally founded as the Royal Institute of
International Affairs following the peace conferences of World War One. Its
founder, Lionel Curtis, wanted a more scientific examination of international affairs
with a transparent exchange of information and ideas.
That arena of debate and analysis was enhanced by the “Chatham
House Rule” states that the contents of any meeting can be discussed outside Chatham
House but no mention can be made identifying individuals who commented.
This has enabled some candid exchanges on difficult subjects
allowing a greater degree of free speech from high-ranking figures.
These meetings are highly valued, so much so that
ambassadors reported them in secret diplomatic cables that – when they were
revealed in the Wikileaks reporting – were thus found to have broken the rule. However,
most speeches are held on the record.
Its research and debate has offered fresh ideas to
policymakers enabling them to more coherently address troubling issues from climate
change to health and food security.

What is Folia?
Prince Khaled bin Alwaleed bin Talal's new plant-based menu will launch at Four Seasons hotels in Dubai this November. A desire to cater to people looking for clean, healthy meals beyond green salad is what inspired Prince Khaled and American celebrity chef Matthew Kenney to create Folia. The word means "from the leaves" in Latin, and the exclusive menu offers fine plant-based cuisine across Four Seasons properties in Los Angeles, Bahrain and, soon, Dubai.
Kenney specialises in vegan cuisine and is the founder of Plant Food Wine and 20 other restaurants worldwide. "I’ve always appreciated Matthew’s work," says the Saudi royal. "He has a singular culinary talent and his approach to plant-based dining is prescient and unrivalled. I was a fan of his long before we established our professional relationship."
Folia first launched at The Four Seasons Hotel Los Angeles at Beverly Hills in July 2018. It is available at the poolside Cabana Restaurant and for in-room dining across the property, as well as in its private event space. The food is vibrant and colourful, full of fresh dishes such as the hearts of palm ceviche with California fruit, vegetables and edible flowers; green hearb tacos filled with roasted squash and king oyster barbacoa; and a savoury coconut cream pie with macadamia crust.
In March 2019, the Folia menu reached Gulf shores, as it was introduced at the Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay, where it is served at the Bay View Lounge. Next, on Tuesday, November 1 – also known as World Vegan Day – it will come to the UAE, to the Four Seasons Resort Dubai at Jumeirah Beach and the Four Seasons DIFC, both properties Prince Khaled has spent "considerable time at and love".
There are also plans to take Folia to several more locations throughout the Middle East and Europe.
While health-conscious diners will be attracted to the concept, Prince Khaled is careful to stress Folia is "not meant for a specific subset of customers. It is meant for everyone who wants a culinary experience without the negative impact that eating out so often comes with."
Sinopharm vaccine explained
The Sinopharm vaccine was created using techniques that have been around for decades.
“This is an inactivated vaccine. Simply what it means is that the virus is taken, cultured and inactivated," said Dr Nawal Al Kaabi, chair of the UAE's National Covid-19 Clinical Management Committee.
"What is left is a skeleton of the virus so it looks like a virus, but it is not live."
This is then injected into the body.
"The body will recognise it and form antibodies but because it is inactive, we will need more than one dose. The body will not develop immunity with one dose," she said.
"You have to be exposed more than one time to what we call the antigen."
The vaccine should offer protection for at least months, but no one knows how long beyond that.
Dr Al Kaabi said early vaccine volunteers in China were given shots last spring and still have antibodies today.
“Since it is inactivated, it will not last forever," she said.
