Paris Saint-Germain: For all of their wealth and willingness to spend absurd amounts in transfer fees, PSG certainly don’t mind themselves a free transfer as Ander Herrera, Dani Alves … and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting can attest. With Mauro Icardi set to return to Inter Milan at the end of his loan spell and Edinson Cavani expected to leave at the end of his contract, PSG are in need of some attacking players. Willian would be joining a strong Brazilian contingent in the French capital, including close friend and star player Neymar. AFP
Willian is set to leave Chelsea at the end of his contract in June. The following five pictures are of clubs he could join ahead of next season. AFP
Tottenham: The links are obvious and make sense. Spurs manager Jose Mourinho is a big fan of Willian’s having signed him for Chelsea – incidentally hijacking Tottenham’s move for the Brazilian – and tried to take him to Old Trafford while in charge of Manchester United. Willian will offer Spurs some much-needed width and added creativity, while Mourinho will know precisely how to fit the Brazilian into his system. Would be a huge surprise if Spurs did not table an offer. AFP
Arsenal: An exciting crop of youngsters coming through and a smattering of big players, but Arsenal still lack quality and Premier League experience, something Willian will be able to offer. His versatility to play right, left, or centrally behind the strikers would suit Mikel Arteta’s fluid front-three and provide another much-needed option. Arsenal might not have the same pulling power of past years, but they could well offer Willian the three-year deal he desires. AP Photo
Barcelona: Perhaps Willian missed his chance to join the Spanish giants when they came knocking in the 2018 summer. Perhaps not. The Brazilian – with his good first touch, movement and football IQ – would suit Barca’s style of play, even if he was to be used as a squad player. As a free agent, Willian would provide Barca a risk-free option, but would the club offer him a three-year deal? Willian would likely drop his demands for the chance to play with Lionel Messi. AP
Juventus: Willian’s relationship with his two previous Chelsea managers couldn’t have been more different. The Brazilian admitted that had Antonio Conte stayed on he would have left, while he held Maurizio Sarri in the highest regard. The feeling was mutual and Sarri, now in charge at Juventus, could be tempted to take Willian to Turin. Competition for places will be fierce, with the likes of Douglas Costa, Federico Bernardeschi, and Juan Cuadrado fighting for spots on the right side, but should one leave, Willian would fit in well at Juve. A link up with Conte at Inter Milan? Probably not. EPA
