Tottenham and United evenly matched - except on paper

Tottenham Hotspur's trip to Old Trafford on Saturday night is a clash of two of the Premier League's big guns.

Manchester United finished second last season, Spurs fourth. Both can be considered title contenders. Their squads are packed with internationals.

On paper it is an even battle. In the statistics world, however, it is a mismatch. The last time Harry Redknapp's side won at Old Trafford was 21 years ago, a 1-0 victory in December 1989. It is nine years and 23 games in all competitions since Spurs beat United at all, a 3-1 league win at White Hart Lane.

And it is not like Tottenham have not had their chances to end that record either. In 2001, they were 3-0 up at half time at home before United famously scored five goals in the second half.

Two seasons ago it was 2-0 at half time at Old Trafford, before a Cristiano Ronaldo-inspired United won 5-2. Spurs' record against their title rivals (Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool, United and now Manchester City) has improved in recent times. They took 15 points from a possible 30 against those teams last season, compared to six two years previously. Spurs beat all their title rivals at some point last season - except United.
