Graziano Pelle ended a 13-game goal drought with a double as Southampton won 2-1 at Stoke City on Saturday to steal a march on their European qualification rivals.
The Italy striker struck twice in the first 30 minutes and despite Marko Arnautovic reducing the arrears and Southampton substitute Sadio Mane seeing red at the death, Ronald Koeman’s side held on for victory.
In ending a three-game winless run in the Premier League, Southampton climbed above Mark Hughes' Stoke to seventh place, three points below Manchester United, who currently occupy the last Europa League slot.
It was Southampton’s first league win at the Britannia Stadium since April 2006.

Stoke welcomed captain Ryan Shawcross back after eight games out with a back problem and they made a positive start, Giannelli Imbula shooting wide after a positive run and Ibrahim Afellay seeing a shot blocked.
But no sooner had Southampton stirred as an attacking force, Stoke goalkeeper Jack Butland tipping Pelle’s header over the bar, than they went ahead.
From Steven Davis’ left-wing corner, Pelle rose at the near post to glance a header past Butland.
Butland parried from Shane Long shortly after, but on the half-hour the Stoke goalkeeper was at fault as Pelle swapped passes with Dusan Tadic before curling in a tame shot that the England international should have saved.
To make matters worse for the home side, winger Xherdan Shaqiri was then forced off holding the top of his thigh, with Bojan Krkic coming on.
Southampton squandered a gilt-edged chance to effectively kill the game off before half-time as Long freed Tadic, whose decision to cut inside onto his right foot allowed Geoff Cameron to come across and block.
Stoke sought to exploit the let-off and reduced the deficit in the 52nd minute, Arnautovic flicking the ball into the roof of the net from Afellay’s cross.
Stoke pushed for a leveller, but found no joy, Afellay shooting over from range and Virgil van Dijk brilliantly diverting Mame Biram Diouf’s shot over the bar.
Southampton should have been awarded a penalty when Tadic was sent sprawling by Butland after knocking the ball past him, only for referee Lee Mason to shake his head.
After Southampton substitute James Ward-Prowse had struck the bar with a free-kick, Mason angered the visitors again by showing Mane a straight red card for an aerial challenge on Erik Pieters, but Koeman’s men survived.

It’s easier to go grey from a lighter colour, so you may want to do that first. And this is the time to try a shorter style, she advises. Then a stylist can introduce highlights, start lightening up the roots, and let it fade out. Once it’s entirely grey, a purple shampoo will prevent yellowing.
“Get professional help – there’s no other way to go around it,” she says. “And don’t just let it grow out because that looks really bad. Put effort into it: properly condition, straighten, get regular trims, make sure it’s glossy.”

One in four Americans don't plan to retire
Nearly a quarter of Americans say they never plan to retire, according to a poll that suggests a disconnection between individuals' retirement plans and the realities of ageing in the workforce.
Experts say illness, injury, layoffs and caregiving responsibilities often force older workers to leave their jobs sooner than they'd like.
According to the poll from The Associated Press-NORC Centre for Public Affairs Research, 23 per cent of workers, including nearly two in 10 of those over 50, don't expect to stop working. Roughly another quarter of Americans say they will continue working beyond their 65th birthday.
According to government data, about one in five people 65 and older was working or actively looking for a job in June. The study surveyed 1,423 adults in February this year.
For many, money has a lot to do with the decision to keep working.
"The average retirement age that we see in the data has gone up a little bit, but it hasn't gone up that much," says Anqi Chen, assistant director of savings research at the Centre for Retirement Research at Boston College. "So people have to live in retirement much longer, and they may not have enough assets to support themselves in retirement."
When asked how financially comfortable they feel about retirement, 14 per cent of Americans under the age of 50 and 29 per cent over 50 say they feel extremely or very prepared, according to the poll. About another four in 10 older adults say they do feel somewhat prepared, while just about one-third feel unprepared.
"One of the things about thinking about never retiring is that you didn't save a whole lot of money," says Ronni Bennett, 78, who was pushed out of her job as a New York City-based website editor at 63.
She searched for work in the immediate aftermath of her layoff, a process she describes as akin to "banging my head against a wall." Finding Manhattan too expensive without a steady stream of income, she eventually moved to Portland, Maine. A few years later, she moved again, to Lake Oswego, Oregon. "Sometimes I fantasise that if I win the lottery, I'd go back to New York," says Ms Bennett.
