Shocking footage emerges of Liverpool's Mohamed Salah being racially abused at West Ham

Egyptian subjected to a torrent of abuse from a home supporter during Premier League match on Monday

Shocking footage has emerged of Liverpool's Egyptian footballer Mohamed Salah being racially abused during a Premier League match at West Ham.

The mobile phone footage, which is being widely shared on social media, shows Salah about to take a corner during the match at West Ham's London Stadium on Monday evening.

A fan can be heard making repeated reference to Salah being Muslim. The identity of the fan cannot be seen in the video.

The club is now investigating the incident and will look to have the individual banned.

A West Ham spokesperson told The National: "At West Ham United, we have a zero tolerance policy to any form of violent or abusive behaviour.

"We are an inclusive football club. Regardless of age, race, religion or belief, marriage or civil partnership, pregnancy or maternity, sex, sexual orientation, gender reassignment or disability, everyone is warmly welcomed at London Stadium.

"Anyone identified committing an offence will have their details passed to the police and will face a lifetime ban from London Stadium. There is no place for this kind of behaviour at our stadium.”

This is the latest in a number of racial incidents to blight the Premier League this season.

In December, a Tottenham fan threw a banana skin at Arsenal's Gabon striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang after he celebrated scoring at the Emirates Stadium. The fan was given a four-year football ban and fined after a court appearance.

Raheem Sterling was allegedly racially abused in December when Manchester City faced Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Sterling received a barrage of abuse from home supporters as he retrieved the ball from behind the goal. Four supporters were subsequently suspended by the club

Sterling said he was not surprised by the behaviour of the fans but did not elaborate on what was said.
