Saudi Arabia manager Herve Renard has taken a reduction in salary to help support the kingdom’s fight against the coronavirus. The Frenchman, appointed manager in July last year, announced the decision on social media late on Saturday, a move that was quickly praised by Prince Abdulaziz bin Turki Al Faisal, the country’s sports minister. “I decided to participate at my level in the support of the country's health administrations by reducing my salary,” Renard posted on Twitter. “I took this initiative in order to support all the efforts made in the fight against the #coronavirus. Wishing you all the best, stay at home.” Renard’s preparations for the 2022 World Cup have been impacted by the pandemic with last month’s qualifiers, and the final two to come in June, postponed. As of yet, no date for resumption has been announced, with October and November the most likely dates. Renard, 51, has taken charge of the Saudi national team for four qualifiers, winning two and drawing two. At present, his side sit second in Group D, one point behind Uzbekistan although they have played a game more. One the top team is guaranteed to advance to the third and final round of qualification, alongside the four best runners-up. Following Renard’s announcement, Prince Abdulaziz replied: “Thank you Coach for your initiative as you are a role model for all athletes – your participation in your effort against Covid19 is highly appreciated. Best wishes my friend and stay safe.”
