Real Madrid crush Legia, Leicester on brink of last-16: Uefa Champions League round-up and results

A round-up of all the reports and results from Tuesday’s Uefa Champions League matches.

Bayer Leverkusen 0 Tottenham Hotspur 0

• Bayer Leverkusen and Tottenham Hotspur fought out a goalless draw in their Group E match, with each team missing golden chances in an entertaining encounter.

The visitors were in control of the first half, hitting the woodwork through Vincent Janssen, while Leverkusen were in complete command after the break, squandering numerous scoring opportunities.

Tottenham had goalkeeper Hugo Lloris to thank after he repeatedly came to the rescue in the second half, including saving a Javier Hernandez effort on the line.

The result leaves Tottenham on four points, with Leverkusen on three, having yet to win a game in the group this season.

Club Brugge 1 FC Porto 2

Club Brugge: Vossen (12’)

Porto: Layun (68’), Silva (90’+3 pen)

• An Andre Silva penalty in the dying stages denied Club Brugges their first Champions League point at the Jan Breydel Stadion.

Belgian forward Jelle Vossen gave the hosts the lead after 12 minutes, but despite their first half lead, Porto went on to dominate much of the match.

The Portuguese side pulled level through Miguel Layun midway through the second half, and would go on to seal all three points with the final kick of the game.

CSKA Moscow 1 Monaco 1

CSKA: Traore (34’)

Monaco: Silva (87’)

• CSKA Moscow were denied a first Champions League victory this season when they were held to a 1-1 draw by Group E leaders Monaco.

Lacina Traore put CSKA in front against his parent club in the 34th minute but Bernardo Silva grabbed the equaliser late on.

The impressive Alexander Golovin orchestrated play from midfield and the hosts took the lead after 34 minutes following a good team move.

Zoran Tosic curled in a left-foot shot that Danijel Subasic could only parry and Traore tapped the rebound into an empty net.

Igor Akinfeev then produced a stunning reaction save from close range at the other end to deny Andrea Raggi.

Monaco put CSKA under considerable pressure early in the second half and captain Valere Germain went close when his effort was thwarted by a last-ditch challenge from defender Vasili Berezutski.

Akinfeev made another top-class stop to deny Benjamin Mendy and the Russian international looked destined to keep his first clean sheet in the group stages at the 40th attempt.

However, Silva levelled for the visitors with three minutes remaining.

Monaco have five points from three games, one in front of Tottenham. Bayer Leverkusen are on three points while CSKA have two.

Dinamo Zagreb 0 Sevilla 1

Sevilla: Nasri (37’)

• Sevilla edged closer to the last 16 after a first-half goal by Samir Nasri gave the Spanish side a 1-0 win at Dinamo Zagreb in their Group H match.

The result left Sevilla, the winners of the last three Europa League titles, level on seven points at the top of the section alongside Juventus, who were 1-0 winners at Lyon..

Sevilla missed a string of chances on a slippery surface either side of Nasri’s clinical 37th-minute finish, when he poked the ball home from a tight angle after a low cross by Mariano Ferreira.

Nasri, who moved to Sevilla on a year-long loan from Manchester City during the close season, shot wide from a similar position midway through the first half as Dinamo struggled to get out of their own half.

Mariano, Luciano Vietto and Franco Vasquez also came close and the visitors were nearly punished for their misses in the closing stages after Dinamo finally pressed forward.

El Arabi Hilal Soudani, Gordon Schildenfeld and 18-year-old Borna Sosa all came within a whisker of getting an equaliser at the Maksimir stadium but Sevilla held on to their slender lead.

Leicester City 1 FC Copenhagen 0

Leicester: Mahrez (40’)

• Leicester City are on the brink of qualifying for the knockout stages after a 1-0 win over Copenhagen continued to defy their domestic woes and kept up a perfect record in Group G.

For the third time this season, Leicester went into a Champions League game on the back of a heavy Premier League defeat but they shrugged off the disappointment to secure a third straight win in the competition thanks to Riyad Mahrez’s 40th-minute goal.

It was no vintage show from Claudio Ranieri’s men, who lost 3-0 at Chelsea on Saturday, although they were unfortunate not to triumph by a bigger margin after Islam Slimani had a goal harshly ruled out for offside in the second half.

Leicester, on nine points, are now five clear of second-placed Copenhagen who suffered their first defeat in 24 matches in all competitions. Porto also have four points after beating Club Bruges 2-1 in Belgium.

Lyon 0 Juventus 1

Juventus: Cuadrado (76’)

• Second-half substitute Juan Cuadrado earned 10-man Juventus a 1-0 win at Olympique Lyonnais after goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon pulled off a couple of superb saves to keep the Serie A leaders afloat in their Group H clash.

Cuadrado scored the only goal in the 76th minute, seven minutes after replacing Paulo Dybala as Juve were down to 10 men following Mario Lemina’s sending-off nine minutes into the second half.

Italy goalkeeper Buffon, who made a rare mistake in the 1-1 World Cup qualifier draw against Spain earlier this month, saved Alexandre Lacazette’s 35th-minute penalty and made a couple of decisive saves before Cuadrado struck the winner.

Massimiliano Allegri’s team retained the lead in the group with seven points from three games, ahead of Sevilla, who beat Dinamo Zagreb 1-0 away, on goal difference. Lyon are third on three points with Dinamo in last place after three defeats from as many matches.

Real Madrid 5 Legia Warsaw 1

Real Madrid: Bale (16’), Jodlowiec (20’ og), Asensio (37’), Lucas (68’), Morata (84’)

Legia: Radovic (22’ pen)

• Holders Real Madrid moved into a commanding position in Group F after cruising to a 5-1 victory over Legia Warsaw.

Gareth Bale scored his first European goal since December 2014 to give the hosts the lead in the 16th minute with a curled left-foot drive and an own goal by Legia’s Tomasz Jodlowiec, deflecting in Marcelo’s shot, doubled their advantage.

Miroslav Radovic pulled one back for the Polish side from the penalty spot but Marco Asensio made it 3-1 in the 37th minute with a low shot on his Champions League debut.

Substitute Lucas Vazquez volleyed home a cross in the 68th minute and former Juventus striker Alvaro Morata rounded off the win by converting a pass from Cristiano Ronaldo, who is still waiting for his 100th goal in Uefa competitions, in the 84th.

Sporting Lisbon 1 Borussia Dortmund 2

Sporting: Cesar (67’)

Dortmund: Aubameyang (9’), Weigl (43’)

• Two superb first-half goals by Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Julian Weigl set Borussia Dortmund on the way to a 2-1 win at Sporting although they had to survive a second-half fightback in a pulsating Group F game.

Bruno Cesar pulled Sporting back into the game when he scored from an indirect free kick midway through the second half but Borussia held on, leaving them on seven points and Sporting with three.

Sporting, without suspended manager Jorge Jesus, made a bright start but the Bundesliga side struck the first blow.

Aubameyang outmuscled Ruben Semedo as the two chased the ball, left the defender on the ground and dinked the ball over Rui Patricio with his left foot in the ninth minute.

Dortmund went further ahead two minutes before halftime as Weigl won a loose ball, evaded a tackle and side-footed a shot into the far corner from the edge of the area, his first goal for the club since he joining one year ago.

It was harsh on Sporting and the Lions hauled themselves back into the game after Buerki was forced to pick up a poor back pass from Marc Bartra.

William Carvalho touched the ball to substitute Cesar who blasted it through the wall of Dortmund players on the goal line in the 67th minute.

Bas Dost nearly levelled with a header almost immediately, Buerki did well to save a dangerous Ezequiel Schelotto cross and Sporting then failed to find a finishing touch to a Gelson Martins shot as the Germans clung on.
