Spanish giants fall after Messi's missed penalty

PARIS SAINT-GERMAIN RATINGS: Keylor Navas 8 – Saved well low to his left from Dembele and again to tip Messi’s effort on to the bar, but he could do little about Messi’s thunderbolt from distance before the break. He then recovered to push Messi’s penalty on to the bar on the stroke of half time. He made more key saves after the break, one in particular denying a Busquets header. AFP

Alessandro Florenzi 5 – Made a number of crucial clearances and interceptions in a busy first half, though Dembele had the better of him. He did get tighter in the second half, but he gave away a free-kick in a dangerous area with 15 minutes remaining. AFP

Marquinhos 8 – Spent much of the game defending his box and though he was sometimes guilty of defending too deep at times, he made an incredible block to deny a Messi goal after the break. That block summed up his performance; he got through a lot of work, much of it last-ditch stuff. AFP

Presnel Kimpembe 7 – Together with Marquinhos, Kimbempe helped to form a resolute wall that withstood waves of pressure. It’s no wonder that many consider this duo one of the best central partnerships in Europe. AFP

Layvin Kurzawa 5 – Received a booking early on after catching Dembele late in the tackle and was then adjudged to have fouled Griezmann in the area. Endured a tough first half and was substituted at the break. PA

Idrissa Gueye 6 – A tricky evening for the tenacious midfielder. Spent much of his evening trying to win the ball back but he was subbed after picking up a yellow card; Pochettino unwilling to take the risk on his side going down to ten men. EPA

Leandro Paredes 6 – Was guilty of losing the ball in dangerous areas at times and needed to sit closer to the defence to offer further protection. Picked up a yellow card that rules him out of the next game in Europe. Reuters

Marco Verratti 6 – Verratti worked hard all evening, even if he had very little to show for his efforts. He was lucky not to have been adjudged to have encroached on Messi’s second penalty, for he did… and he was the player who subsequently cleared. EPA

Julian Draxler 5 – Hauled off just after the break, the German had little impact on the game. Starved of possession in forward areas, he was unable to get on the ball and influence the play in the Barca half. AFP

Mauro Icardi 6 – The Italian had to watch most of the game played behind him and he cut a frustrated figure, though he did win the penalty that took the sting out of the tie. When he did get the ball, he was pressed quickly. Did his defensive duties well, though, and cleared with a header from a teasing Messi free-kick. AFP

Kylian Mbappe 6 – After looking a threat on the counter attack in the early stages, Mbappe gave PSG the lead from the penalty spot after it was adjudged that Icardi’s shirt had been pulled. In converting, he became the youngest player to score 25 Champions League goals. He had several shots from distance to add to his tally, including a wonderful chance late on that cannoned off the bar. EPA

SUBS: Abdou Diallo 6 – His first involvement was a neat touch to clear a cross, and he got the better of Dest in an interesting battle between the two. AFP

Angel di Maria 6 – Made a crucial interception to prevent a shooting opportunity for Firpo with 20 left on the clock, but his final ball was poor at the other end. AFP

Danilo 6 – He made a crucial interception with Messi prowling, which Marquinhos then cleared. EPA

Colin Dagba N/A – Replaced the injured Florenzi and did little wrong against a rampant Dembele.EPA

Rafinha N/A – Offered some fresh legs when he came on in place of Verratti and helped to run down the clock against his former side. AFP

BARCELONA RATINGS: Marc-Andre ter Stegen 7 - Barely needed in the first half apart from the penalty, for which he had no chance. Barely needed in the second half as his team dominated. Rushed out to meet the advancing Mbappe on 90 minutes, but the star of the first leg shot over. EPA

Sergino Dest 8 - Super early run down the right to get behind the PSG defenders and cross, then made an even run. Did so well that the man marking him was taken off at half time. Dest followed after 66. AFP

Clement Lenglet 7 - The second of three first half bookings – and a controversial one which led to a penalty. It seemed so, so harsh for the most innocuous of touches on Icardi. AP

Oscar Mingueza 5 - Headed wide as Barça struggled to make their early pressure tell. Yellow for pulling back Mbappe on 24 and had to be careful after fouling him again a minute later. Brought off after 34 as seen as a risk to his team. EPA

Jordi Alba 8 - Always a threat on the left – where most of Barca’s attacks came from. Beautiful ball to Messi after 60 as Koeman’s side pushed to get a second against the clock – and reach the last eight for the 14th consecutive year. Like the ball to his close friend with whom he enjoys such an on-field understanding, it wasn’t to be. AFP

Pedri 7 - Confident performance for the teen. Worked well with Alba to his left and Busquets to his right. EPA

Frenkie De Jong 7 - Played as a defender in the Catalans’ unfamiliar 3-4-1-2 formation. Booked for complaining about a tackle on Dest. The Dutchman is a big part of his side’s future. AFP

Sergio Busquets 8 - Low shot on 41 minutes– one of nine attempts on target in the first half. Dominant figure in the middle of the pitch but had to come off as Pochettino’s subs helped PSG gain some control in the middle. AP

Ousmane Dembele 7 - Bright start and runs, one which led to a weak shot on target after 10, then shot far over after 12. Then shot again across the keeper after 18. Missed an easier chance after 34. Got into perfect positions all night, but couldn’t finish. AP

Antoine Griezmann 7 - Bright start like his team, twice set up Dembele and flicked a header goal-bound himself. Won a penalty against his compatriots and ran all night, even working back to his own half to tackle Mbappe. Could have got into more dangerous positions more often, though he shot well over after 84. EPA

Lionel Messi 8 - Eighth minute free-kick sailed over and he wasn’t involved in the main Barca attacks, then beat Navas for a beautiful equaliser from outside the area on 37. Saw his 45th minute penalty pushed onto the bar. Best player on the pitch. Was that his final ever European game for the Catalans? AFP

SUBS: Junior Firpo 7 - On for Mingueza after 34 before he was sent off. Straight into trying to contain Mbappe with immediate tussles. EPA

Francisco Trincao 7 - On as a substitute for the 25th time this season – this time for Dest after 65. Attacking intent immediate and he had a 73rd minute volley blocked, but Barca couldn’t get the goals they needed. AP

Lionel Messi scored one stunning goal but then had a penalty saved as Barcelona were knocked out of the Champions League after a 1-1 draw against Paris Saint-Germain in France saw them beaten 5-2 on aggregate.

Kylian Mbappe netted a hat-trick as PSG stunned Barca 4-1 in the first leg last month, and he extended their advantage in this last-16 tie by netting a first-half penalty to put last season's runners-up ahead on the night.

But Messi made it 1-1 with a ferocious strike from 30 metres and the Argentine had the chance to put the visitors ahead after Antoine Griezmann was fouled in the area, only for the outstanding Keylor Navas to tip his spot-kick on to the bar.

Barcelona certainly went for it, but there was to be no repeat of their infamous recovery against the same opponents four years ago, when they lost the first leg 4-0 but triumphed 6-1 in the return.

It is the first time they have gone out before the quarter-finals since 2007 and, after Juventus were knocked out on Tuesday, neither Messi nor Cristiano Ronaldo will feature in the last eight for the first time since 2005.
