Mohamed Salah and Jamie Vardy hit the goal trail: Premier League team of the week

The 2020/21 season kicked off in spectacular fashion

• 

  Goalkeeper: Vicente Guaita (Crystal Palace) – Palace finished last season with one point from eight games so Guaita’s late saves to deny Southampton an equaliser had particular importance. EPA

  Right-back: Timothy Castagne (Leicester City) – A clean sheet in a fine defensive display and a goal with a forceful header made it a debut to remember for the Belgian against West Brom. AFP

  Centre-back: Michael Keane (Everton) – Helped keep Harry Kane quiet and restrict Tottenham to two shots on target as Everton ended their long wait for a win away at big-six opponents. Reuters

  Centre-back: Gabriel Magalhaes (Arsenal) – The Brazilian slotted in seamlessly in the middle of the back three on his Arsenal bow and capped a fine display at Fulham with a goal. AFP

  Left-back: Jamal Lewis (Newcastle) – Looked a fine recruit for Newcastle, acquitting himself well against Jarrod Bowen and showing excellent crossing when he forayed forward. Reuters

  Right midfield: Willian (Arsenal) – Involved in all three goals at Fulham, getting assists with a corner that Gabriel Magalhaes headed in and a cross-field pass for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. Reuters

  Centre midfield: Jeff Hendrick (Newcastle) – Not one of the most glamorous signings but a free transfer’s goalscoring debut at West Ham suggested he is an astute bit of business. AFP

  Centre midfield: Allan (Everton) – The Brazilian looked the anchorman Everton have been missing with an authoritative display to win the midfield battle against Tottenham. Reuters

  Left midfield: Jack Harrison (Leeds) – Scored Leeds’ first Premier League goal for 16 years in impressive fashion, contributed to Patrick Bamford’s strike and troubled Liverpool. EPA

  Centre forward: Mohamed Salah (Liverpool) – Two nerveless penalties and a brilliant rising shot gave him an opening-day hat-trick and decided a thriller against Leeds. EPA

  Centre forward: Jamie Vardy (Leicester) – The Golden Boot winner began his quest to retain his title with two clinical spot kicks. He ran West Bromwich Albion ragged. EPA

The first weekend of the season was littered with goals with Mohamed Salah bagging a hat-trick and Jamie Vardy scoring twice from the penalty spot.

There were several encouraging debuts. Willian assisted in all three of Arsenal's goals at Fulham; Timothy Castagne began his Leicester City career with a shutout and a goal against West Brom, while Allan shone as Everton picked up three points against Tottenham.
