Not only did Marcus Rashford become Manchester United's youngest European goalscorer when he struck two goals on Thursday night as United came from behind to beat Danish side Midtjylland in the Europa League, but the 18-year-old Mancunian United fan also became only the second player to score for United's Under 18s, 19s, 21s and the first team in the same season.
James Wilson, now on loan at Championship side Brighton & Hove Albion, was the first player to do it last season. Like Rashford, he scored twice on his United debut as an 18-year-old, though Wilson’s goals came in an end-of-season dead rubber against Hull City rather than to save United from being eliminated from European competition.

Wilson was popular with fans who watched United’s young sides and he did well in glimpses for the first-team last season, starting four games and featuring in a further 13 from the substitutes’ bench.
Manager Louis van Gaal was more circumspect, telling him to reduce dribbling. This season, Van Gaal didn’t play him even when United had injuries. The Dutchman thinks Wilson will develop better away from Old Trafford where he will get more minutes, yet a lack of goals has seen Wilson lose his status as a regular starter at Brighton.
Exciting as it is for a home-grown teenager to play for United’s first team, fans won’t get carried away because history shows they are still a long way off establishing themselves. Many teenagers get a chance in a couple of matches, but the majority end up away from Old Trafford. English football is full of players who played a couple of games for United and then made a career elsewhere, several of them strikers.
Danny Welbeck, who played for the same junior team as Rashford in south Manchester, is the most successful homegrown striker since 1980s star Mark Hughes, though Van Gaal let him leave for Arsenal soon after arriving in 2014.
Welbeck, who returned from injury to score a 95th-minute winning goal for Arsenal against top-of-the-table Leicester City recently, is another Mancunian United fan and he will likely line up against United at Old Trafford on Sunday.
Rashford could play if Anthony Martial fails to recover from a hamstring injury picked up in Thursday’s warm up, although Van Gaal has suggested he will be on the bench.
United’s extensive injury list has seen Van Gaal, who has promoted young players including Xavi, Andres Iniesta and Thomas Muller throughout his career, award debuts to six homegrown players this season. Four players made their debuts in February alone, including Rashford, Regan Poole and Joe Riley last week.
It is unlikely any would have got a chance if it wasn’t for the injuries, but Rashford is highly rated. He was the stand out player as United’s U19s beat PSV Eindhoven away in September in the Uefa Youth League, scoring twice in a 3-0 win for Nicky Butt’s side. After another win at Wolfsburg in December, I spoke to Butt about his captain Rashford.
“He is one of those players who you like and ask yourself: ‘How can he not play at the top level?’” said Butt. “In my opinion he is a top, top player. He has a lot to learn still obviously. He has to learn to get better at finishing and getting in the right areas.
“You want more goals and the coaching staff are always feeding him information. We show him videos of Ruud van Nistelrooy, for instance, and how he scored his goals in the six-yard area.
“Marcus tends to get a bit frustrated in there and comes out of the areas to get the ball and then tries to run through. That is a very difficult skill – and you don’t score many goals like that.
“But the added things are he has electric pace, a great work ethic and a willingness to learn.”
Those attributes have served him well so far. His contract is currently worth £1,500 (Dh7,642) per week and expires in 2017, though United are keen to improve the terms and extend it.

Garlicky shrimp in olive oil

Ingredients
180ml extra virgin olive oil; 4 to 5 large cloves of garlic, minced or pureed (or 3 to 4 garlic scapes, roughly chopped); 1 or 2 small hot red chillies, dried (or ¼ teaspoon dried red chilli flakes); 400g raw prawns, deveined, heads removed and tails left intact; a generous splash of sweet chilli vinegar; sea salt flakes for seasoning; a small handful of fresh flat-leaf parsley, roughly chopped
Method
▶ Heat the oil in a terracotta dish or frying pan. Once the oil is sizzling hot, add the garlic and chilli, stirring continuously for about 10 seconds until golden and aromatic.
▶ Add a splash of sweet chilli vinegar and as it vigorously simmers, releasing perfumed aromas, add the prawns and cook, stirring a few times.
▶ Once the prawns turn pink, after 1 or 2 minutes of cooking, remove from the heat and season with sea salt flakes.
▶ Once the prawns are cool enough to eat, scatter with parsley and serve with small forks or toothpicks as the perfect sharing starter. Finish off with crusty bread to soak up all that flavour-infused olive oil.

They come with no upfront costs aside from your brokerage's dealing charges and annual fees, which are far lower than on traditional mutual investment funds. Charges are as low as 0.03 per cent on one of the very cheapest (and most popular), Vanguard S&P 500 ETF, with the maximum around 0.75 per cent.
There is no fund manager deciding which stocks and other assets to invest in, instead they passively track their chosen index, country, region or commodity, regardless of whether it goes up or down.
The first ETF was launched as recently as 1993, but the sector boasted $5.78 billion in assets under management at the end of September as inflows hit record highs, according to the latest figures from ETFGI, a leading independent research and consultancy firm.
There are thousands to choose from, with the five largest providers BlackRock’s iShares, Vanguard, State Street Global Advisers, Deutsche Bank X-trackers and Invesco PowerShares.
While the best-known track major indices such as MSCI World, the S&P 500 and FTSE 100, you can also invest in specific countries or regions, large, medium or small companies, government bonds, gold, crude oil, cocoa, water, carbon, cattle, corn futures, currency shifts or even a stock market crash.

The flights
The closest international airport to the TMB trail is Geneva (just over an hour’s drive from the French ski town of Chamonix where most people start and end the walk). Direct flights from the UAE to Geneva are available with Etihad and Emirates from about Dh2,790 including taxes.
The trek
The Tour du Mont Blanc takes about 10 to 14 days to complete if walked in its entirety, but by using the services of a tour operator such as Raw Travel, a shorter “highlights” version allows you to complete the best of the route in a week, from Dh6,750 per person. The trails are blocked by snow from about late October to early May. Most people walk in July and August, but be warned that trails are often uncomfortably busy at this time and it can be very hot. The prime months are June and September.

TOUCH RULES
Touch is derived from rugby league. Teams consist of up to 14 players with a maximum of six on the field at any time.
Teams can make as many substitutions as they want during the 40 minute matches.
Similar to rugby league, the attacking team has six attempts - or touches - before possession changes over.
A touch is any contact between the player with the ball and a defender, and must be with minimum force.
After a touch the player performs a “roll-ball” - similar to the play-the-ball in league - stepping over or rolling the ball between the feet.
At the roll-ball, the defenders have to retreat a minimum of five metres.
A touchdown is scored when an attacking player places the ball on or over the score-line.

The flights
Etihad and Emirates fly direct to Kolkata from Dh1,504 and Dh1,450 return including taxes, respectively. The flight takes four hours 30 minutes outbound and 5 hours 30 minute returning.
The trains
Numerous trains link Kolkata and Murshidabad but the daily early morning Hazarduari Express (3’ 52”) is the fastest and most convenient; this service also stops in Plassey. The return train departs Murshidabad late afternoon. Though just about feasible as a day trip, staying overnight is recommended.
The hotels
Mursidabad’s hotels are less than modest but Berhampore, 11km south, offers more accommodation and facilities (and the Hazarduari Express also pauses here). Try Hotel The Fame, with an array of rooms from doubles at Rs1,596/Dh90 to a ‘grand presidential suite’ at Rs7,854/Dh443.
