Manchester United “will have to offer €20 million or more” if they want to sign striker Mario Gomez, Besiktas president Fikret Orman has stated.
Gomez, 30, is currently on loan at Besiktas from Serie A side Fiorentina, although the Turkish club have a deal in place to make the move permanent at the end of the season.
Gomez’s impressive start to the season, that has brought eight goals in 11 appearances to help Besiktas to the top of the Super Lig, makes a permanent move all but assured.
However, reports have claimed Premier League club United are interested in the Germany international as manager Louis van Gaal looks to recruit a reliable goal-scorer to fix his team’s profligacy.
And Orman has warned United — and any other interested club — that Gomez will not be allowed to leave on the cheap.
“At the end of the season if any club wants Gomez they will have to offer €20 million (Dh78.7m) or more. I mean we are talking about a German international striker who has proven himself countless times at the highest level,” Orman was quoted as saying by Radyospor.
Recent praise from Van Gaal of Gomez led to the initial speculation linking United with the striker.
"I was manager of Bayern, and there the striker was Mario Gomez, and he touched the ball nine times as an average in a game," Van Gaal said in an interview with the Guardian.
“The highest was 14 balls but he scored every game and I don’t think that our strikers touch the ball less. It’s how the balls are coming to him, how he decides, how quick he is in dealing with the situation, it’s much more complicated than everyone is thinking.”
The National’s view
Since the departure of Robin van Persie, and to a lesser extent Javier Hernandez, Manchester United have severely lacked a striker that can produce a steady stream of goals. While Anthony Martial has so far proved a fine addition, both the Frenchman and captain Wayne Rooney are never going to produce the type of scoring figures needed to propel United to the title. A move for Mario Gomez, an authentic No 9, while not exactly fashionable, would certainly fit the profile of the player Louis van Gaal is looking for. It is more likely that a move for Gomez would occur if Van Gaal fails to lure more high-profile targets.

Your rights as an employee
The government has taken an increasingly tough line against companies that fail to pay employees on time. Three years ago, the Cabinet passed a decree allowing the government to halt the granting of work permits to companies with wage backlogs.
The new measures passed by the Cabinet in 2016 were an update to the Wage Protection System, which is in place to track whether a company pays its employees on time or not.
If wages are 10 days late, the new measures kick in and the company is alerted it is in breach of labour rules. If wages remain unpaid for a total of 16 days, the authorities can cancel work permits, effectively shutting off operations. Fines of up to Dh5,000 per unpaid employee follow after 60 days.
Despite those measures, late payments remain an issue, particularly in the construction sector. Smaller contractors, such as electrical, plumbing and fit-out businesses, often blame the bigger companies that hire them for wages being late.
The authorities have urged employees to report their companies at the labour ministry or Tawafuq service centres — there are 15 in Abu Dhabi.

Trump has so far secured 295 Electoral College votes, according to the Associated Press, exceeding the 270 needed to win. Only Nevada and Arizona remain to be called, and both swing states are leaning Republican. Trump swept all five remaining swing states, North Carolina, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin, sealing his path to victory and giving him a strong mandate.

Why it pays to compare
A comparison of sending Dh20,000 from the UAE using two different routes at the same time - the first direct from a UAE bank to a bank in Germany, and the second from the same UAE bank via an online platform to Germany - found key differences in cost and speed. The transfers were both initiated on January 30.
Route 1: bank transfer
The UAE bank charged Dh152.25 for the Dh20,000 transfer. On top of that, their exchange rate margin added a difference of around Dh415, compared with the mid-market rate.
Total cost: Dh567.25 - around 2.9 per cent of the total amount
Total received: €4,670.30
Route 2: online platform
The UAE bank’s charge for sending Dh20,000 to a UK dirham-denominated account was Dh2.10. The exchange rate margin cost was Dh60, plus a Dh12 fee.
Total cost: Dh74.10, around 0.4 per cent of the transaction
Total received: €4,756
The UAE bank transfer was far quicker – around two to three working days, while the online platform took around four to five days, but was considerably cheaper. In the online platform transfer, the funds were also exposed to currency risk during the period it took for them to arrive.
