Liverpool and Chelsea bounce back with wins, Manchester City edge Everton: Premier League predictions

Another full round of fixtures comes between the Boxing Day and New Year schedules

MONDAY: Crystal Palace v Leicester City (7pm). Palace are enduring another one of their slumps and have lost their last two. Leicester have fared much better away from home and still went toe-to-toe with Manchester United last time out. More misery for Roy Hodgson’s team. PREDICTION: Crystal Palace 1 Leicester City 2 AFP

Chelsea v Aston Villa (11.30pm). Chelsea’s bright start is starting to feel like a distant memory as Frank Lampard aims to halt a poor run of three defeats in four games. Villa are in good form and occupy the place above the Blues. Should be a Chelsea reaction. PREDICTION: Chelsea 3 Aston Villa 1 Reuters

Everton v Manchester City (midnight). An intriguing match-up between an Everton team bang in form and a City side yet to find their groove. Form says Everton but this is the sort of game where the City’s class might shine through for a narrow win. PREDICTION: Everton 0 Manchester City 1 AP

TUESDAY: Brighton v Arsenal (10pm). Mikel Arteta will hope the win over Chelsea is a turning point for Arsenal and a trip to Brighton, who have won just two matches this season, seems as good a place as any to make it two wins from two. It won’t be comfortable though. PREDICTION: Brighton 1 Arsenal 2 Reuters

Burnley v Sheffield United (10pm). Two teams who have not exactly set the Premier League alight this season. Burnley were unlucky not to get a point last time out against Leeds and have improved since a slow start, while United continue to search for their first win. The wait goes on another game. PREDICTION: Burnley 1 Sheffield United 0 EPA

Southampton v West Ham (10pm). Both sides would be quite satisfied with their campaigns so far even if they have slipped down the table in recent weeks. Southampton are the team in better form and should win this one. PREDICTION: Southampton 2 West Ham 0

West Brom v Leeds (10pm). Leeds are by far the hardest team to predict this season, and while on the surface this looks like a win for the away side, it’s impossible to know which team will show up. West Brom have been solid in the past few games and are worth a point here. PREDICTION: West Brom 1 Leeds 1

Manchester United v Wolves (midnight). United ended their woeful home record with a 6-2 thrashing of Leeds but will find in Wolves a less porous unit. Wolves are having a tough time of it this season but have enough quality to make this a challenge for United. PREDICTION: Manchester United 3 Wolves 1 EPA

WEDNESDAY: Tottenham v Fulham (10pm). Spurs have endured a bit of a slump the past four games with two draws and two defeats. Fulham, meanwhile, have become the Premier League’s draw machines with four successive ties. Tottenham to get back on track with a solid three points. PREDICTION: Tottenham 2 Fulham 0 Getty Images

Newcastle v Liverpool (midnight). A blip last time out in the draw against West Brom, but Liverpool rarely produce two successive lacklustre displays. Newcastle are not in great form and could ship a few in this one. PREDICTION: Newcastle 0 Liverpool 4 EPA

For Premier League football fans, this really is the most wonderful time of the year. Christmas and Boxing Day may have come and gone, but the hectic Premier League winter schedule still has some way to go.

Crystal Palace and Leicester City kick off proceedings at Selhurst Park on Monday evening, before Chelsea aim to bounce back when they host Aston Villa and Manchester City travel to Everton.

Tuesday sees four matches all start at the same time: Brighton v Arsenal, Burnley v Sheffield United, Southampton v West Ham, and West Brom v Leeds, with Manchester United welcoming Wolves to Old Trafford in the later game.

On Wednesday, Fulham travel to North London to face Tottenham Hotspur, while champions Liverpool make the trip to take on Newcastle.
