City advance to FA Cup semi-finals after 2-0 win at Goodison

EVERTON RATINGS: Joao Virginia – 7. For all City’s possession, the ball did not make it through as far as the Portuguese goalkeeper too often – before he made a fine save at full stretch from Sterling. He did well thereafter. Reuters

Mason Holgate – 6. Lucky not to give away a penalty when he clipped the shins of Foden in the box. Was the man who made way as the hosts chased the game after Gundogan’s goal. EPA

Yerry Mina – 7. A threat at attacking corners, and stooped to head away a dangerous one into his own area, too. EPA

Ben Godfrey – 8. Quick to make a block when Foden had found himself space to shoot on the brink of half time. Made one big tackle in the second half to raise the home team. Scarcely let Jesus have a kick. AFP

Seamus Coleman – 6. Just about managed to keep a hold on Sterling, but was not able to offer much else to the home side’s forward push as a result. Reuters

Andre Gomes – 7. Made an important interception from a Sterling pass early on, and did plenty of good work in breaking up City attacks. AFP

Allan – 7. Booked for an untimely clip on Gundogan in the first half and walked a tightrope against the City midfield thereafter, but was tireless in his efforts. EPA

Lucas Digne – 6. Looked exhausted by attempting to keep track of Foden, and was happy when the young Englishman went over to the other flank. EPA

Gylfi Sigurdsson – 6. His throughball brought an error from Steffen and almost an opening for Calvert-Lewin. A threat at set-pieces with so many tall targets to aim at. Reuters

Dominic Calvert-Lewin – 7. Lean pickings as he did not see the ball much, but when he did he looked polished and direct. EPA

Richarlison – 6. Suffered a painful looking blow from the elbow of his compatriot Fernandinho, and was often too single minded as he tried to right that perceived wrong. Reuters

SUB: Alex Iwobi – NA. Brought on once Everton had dropped a goal behind, but was unable to effect the play before the deficit had doubled. EPA

MANCHESTER CITY RATINGS: Zack Steffen – 6. Gave Ederson a run for his money with the audacity of some of his passing. Aimed a rash miss-kick when trying to sweep up a Calvert-Lewin attack. AFP

Kyle Walker – 6. Might have done with joining the attacks more often than he did, as he was underemployed in his defensive duties. Reuters

Aymeric Laporte – 7. Took charge of the game when it looked to be drifting to extra time with two driving runs from the back, the second of which created the first goal for Gundogan. EPA

Ruben Dias – 6. His understated poise at centre-back helped offset his occasionally jittery young goalkeeper. That said, Calvert-Lewin’s pace gave him worries. Reuters

Oleksandr Zinchenko – 7. Had to be in the right place to head a goalbound Mina header from a corner. Saw a blistering drive blocked as City chased an opener deep in the second half. Reuters

Bernardo Silva – 6. A lukewarm display from the Portugal playmaker who struggled to prise any openings of note and gave way for Mahrez just after the hour mark. AFP

Fernandinho – 8. Maybe lucky no action was taken when his flailing arm caught Richarlison in the mouth. His aerial prowess blunted a number of Everton forays. So canny is his positioning. EPA

Ilkay Gundogan – 7. Needed treatment after having his legs chopped by Allan. Typically dexterous in possession, and in the right place to turn the goal in once Laporte’s shot had hit the bar. Reuters

Raheem Sterling – 6. His bright start gave way to agitation after Sigurdsson bumped into his face. Should have given City the lead, but scuffed his shot just enough to give Virginia a chance to save. Reuters

Gabriel Jesus – 6. Well shackled by a determined Godfrey, which meant he had a frustrating evening – and suffered some bruises from the same player, too. EPA

Phil Foden – 8. Another example of his commendable willingness to stay on his feet when he did not think to fall under a challenge from Holgate in the box. He was the brightest spark within a City attack that lacked its usual sparkle. Reuters

SUB: Riyad Mahrez – 7. Added a lot more attacking thrust to the City attack once he had come on for the labouring Silva. Reuters

SUB: Kevin de Bruyne – 7. Came on for Sterling, set up the chance from which Gundogan eventually scored the first, then made no mistake as he settled the win with the second. AFP

Manchester City maintained their quest for a quadruple of major titles as they ground out a 2-0 win over Everton in the FA Cup quarter-final.

The away side picked up their 25th win in the space of 26 matches, but found it difficult to dispatch a dogged Everton side at Goodison Park.

The scores remained deadlocked until the 84th minute when Ilkay Gundogan bundled in a header from close range after Aymeric Laporte’s shot rebounded off the bar.

Substitute Kevin de Bruyne ended Everton’s hopes of a late comeback as he doubled City’s advantage in injury time.
