  EVERTON RATINGS: Joao Virginia – 7. For all City’s possession, the ball did not make it through as far as the Portuguese goalkeeper too often – before he made a fine save at full stretch from Sterling. He did well thereafter. Reuters

  Mason Holgate – 6. Lucky not to give away a penalty when he clipped the shins of Foden in the box. Was the man who made way as the hosts chased the game after Gundogan’s goal. EPA

  Richarlison – 6. Suffered a painful looking blow from the elbow of his compatriot Fernandinho, and was often too single minded as he tried to right that perceived wrong. Reuters

  MANCHESTER CITY RATINGS: Zack Steffen – 6. Gave Ederson a run for his money with the audacity of some of his passing. Aimed a rash miss-kick when trying to sweep up a Calvert-Lewin attack. AFP

  Kyle Walker – 6. Might have done with joining the attacks more often than he did, as he was underemployed in his defensive duties. Reuters

  Aymeric Laporte – 7. Took charge of the game when it looked to be drifting to extra time with two driving runs from the back, the second of which created the first goal for Gundogan. EPA

Manchester City maintained their quest for a quadruple of major titles as they ground out a 2-0 win over Everton in the FA Cup quarter-final.

The away side picked up their 25th win in the space of 26 matches, but found it difficult to dispatch a dogged Everton side at Goodison Park.

The scores remained deadlocked until the 84th minute when Ilkay Gundogan bundled in a header from close range after Aymeric Laporte’s shot rebounded off the bar.

Substitute Kevin de Bruyne ended Everton’s hopes of a late comeback as he doubled City’s advantage in injury time.
