Jose Mourinho thinks Spain coach Vicente del Bosque is to blame for Diego Costa’s recent injury troubles.
Costa began the season in prolific form, scoring nine goals in seven matches, but he has missed Chelsea’s last three fixtures because of a persistent hamstring injury and he will be absent from the squad for Tuesday’s League Cup tie against Shrewsbury.
The former Atletico Madrid man had also been suffering from a virus in the build-up to Sunday’s Premier League match against Manchester United, but Mourinho revealed it was injury, rather than illness that ruled the £32 million (Dh189.5m) signing out of the 1-1 draw at Old Trafford.
The striker has been troubled by the hamstring problem for some time, but Mourinho believes it was exacerbated by Del Bosque when he fielded the 26-year-old in back-to-back games against Slovakia and Luxembourg earlier this month.
The Chelsea manager said: “He (Costa) had to go to the hospital and obviously it doesn’t help him to recover from his injury. But he didn’t play on Sunday because of the injury, not because of the virus.
“Diego has the hamstring (problem) because he played two matches in three days when he was not with us.”
Mourinho voiced his concern over a lack of communication with Del Bosque and other national coaches earlier this month and the problem still clearly concerns him.
When asked whether he hoped Costa’s injury problems would soon be over, Mourinho replied wryly: “But he still has the national team in November.”
This weekend Mourinho looks as though he will be able to recall the Premier League’s deadliest striker.
“I think so,” replied the Portuguese when asked if Costa would be fit for Saturday’s Premier League game against QPR.
Costa’s physical presence would have helped Chelsea in their battle at Old Trafford, where Mourinho and captain John Terry felt their side should have had a penalty in the first half.
Branislav Ivanovic went down in the box during a tussle with United defender Chris Smalling during a set piece. Just in front of Ivanovic, Terry also tumbled to the ground as he battled with Marcos Rojo, but no penalty was awarded.
Terry hit out at United and Dowd on Instagram with a clear complaint in the form of a hashtag.
The Chelsea captain wrote: ‘’It shows how well we are playing when you come away from Old Trafford disappointed with 1 point.
‘’Thanks to all the travelling fans for your great support.
#JtandIVAgotdoubleheadlockedfromeverycorner.’’
Mourinho confirmed in a post-match briefing at Old Trafford that Andre Schurrle, Mohamed Salah, Kurt Zouma, John Obi Mikel and Lewis Baker will play at Shrewsbury.
The Shrews are 71 places below Mourinho’s unbeaten side so it was with little surprise that the Chelsea manager called Tuesday’s match a “friendly”.
He still refuses to take victory over the League Two promotion contenders for granted though.
Mourinho added: “You can say that Shrewsbury in the League Cup is a friendly, but we have to play the match and respect the match.
“It is a big day for them and we know it is going to be difficult for us.”

1. Build digital or technical skills: After graduation, people can find it extremely hard to find jobs. From programming to digital marketing, your early twenties are for building skills. Future employers will want people with tech skills.
2. Side hustle: At 16, I lived in a village and started teaching online, as well as doing work as a virtual assistant and marketer. There are six skills you can use online: translation; teaching; programming; digital marketing; design and writing. If you master two, you’ll always be able to make money.
3. Networking: Knowing how to make connections is extremely useful. Use LinkedIn to find people who have the job you want, connect and ask to meet for coffee. Ask how they did it and if they know anyone who can help you. I secured quite a few clients this way.
4. Pay yourself first: The minute you receive any income, put about 15 per cent aside into a savings account you won’t touch, to go towards your emergency fund or to start investing. I do 20 per cent. It helped me start saving immediately.

The most expensive investment mistake you will ever make
When is the best time to start saving in a pension? The answer is simple – at the earliest possible moment. The first pound, euro, dollar or dirham you invest is the most valuable, as it has so much longer to grow in value. If you start in your twenties, it could be invested for 40 years or more, which means you have decades for compound interest to work its magic.
“You get growth upon growth upon growth, followed by more growth. The earlier you start the process, the more it will all roll up,” says Chris Davies, chartered financial planner at The Fry Group in Dubai.

Multitasking pays off for money goals
Tackling money goals one at a time cost financial literacy expert Barbara O'Neill at least $1 million.
That's how much Ms O'Neill, a distinguished professor at Rutgers University in the US, figures she lost by starting saving for retirement only after she had created an emergency fund, bought a car with cash and purchased a home.
"I tell students that eventually, 30 years later, I hit the million-dollar mark, but I could've had $2 million," Ms O'Neill says.
Too often, financial experts say, people want to attack their money goals one at a time: "As soon as I pay off my credit card debt, then I'll start saving for a home," or, "As soon as I pay off my student loan debt, then I'll start saving for retirement"."
People do not realise how costly the words "as soon as" can be. Paying off debt is a worthy goal, but it should not come at the expense of other goals, particularly saving for retirement. The sooner money is contributed, the longer it can benefit from compounded returns. Compounded returns are when your investment gains earn their own gains, which can dramatically increase your balances over time.
"By putting off saving for the future, you are really inhibiting yourself from benefiting from that wonderful magic," says Kimberly Zimmerman Rand , an accredited financial counsellor and principal at Dragonfly Financial Solutions in Boston. "If you can start saving today ... you are going to have a lot more five years from now than if you decide to pay off debt for three years and start saving in year four."
