Chelsea drawn to play Manchester United in Champions League quarter-finals

Javier Hernandez has conceded that Manchester United face a tough task to reach the Champions League semi-finals.

United have been pitched into an all-English last-eight clash with Chelsea, with the first leg to be played at Stamford Bridge on April 6.

It is a repeat of the 2008 final, when United triumphed on penalties at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow. However, it also sends United to a ground where they have not won since 2002 and were defeated earlier this month in a stormy encounter that ended with Sir Alex Ferguson picking up a five-match touchline ban.

"We play in the same league and it is going to be tough," said Hernandez, who scored both goals against Marseille on Tuesday to sweep United into the quarter-finals. "Stamford Bridge is a nice stadium and it makes it a little bit like a league game.

"But if there is an advantage it's that we are at home in the second game."

Hernandez has scored three Champions League goals in an overall tally of 16 in an outstanding debut season for United and admits the style of the tournament suits him.

"I am trying to think game by game and not to look too far in the future," he said, "but I am very happy with the way things are going in the Champions League, and I want to keep it like that."

Carlos Ancelotti, Chelsea manger, and his men are happy to be playing a team they will see three times in the space of a month; they also meet in the Premier League on May 7.

"The draw has thrown up an exciting fixture against Manchester United - a team we know well and that we have a good recent record against," said Ron Gourlay, chief executive with Chelsea. "We will approach this game the same as we will the meeting we have left against them in the Premier League.

"Playing anyone at this point in the world's top club competition is always a challenge. If we want to succeed in getting to the final at Wembley and winning this trophy then we have to beat the best Europe has to offer."

David Barnard, the Chelsea secretary, said that "it's not about revenge [for losing the 2008 final to United on penalties], but we know each other well enough.

"Whether the players want to put a wrong right is a bit of a cliche but it's a great motivation."

The two have met 158 times in domestic competition with United winning 67 times to Chelsea's 44.

The second leg will be at Old Trafford on April 12.

"The second leg at home is an advantage but European football is sometimes different in how it's played to domestic competitions," said John Alexander, United's secretary.
