Brazilian defender David Luiz could be set for a surprise return to Chelsea after the Premier League club made an offer to Paris Saint-Germain, according to media reports.
Luiz, 29, spent three-and-a-half seasons at Chelsea having signed from Portuguese club Benfica in January 2011 for a fee of €25 million (Dh102.6m).
The Brazil international became a fan favourite, helping Chelsea win the Uefa Champions League and FA Cup in 2012 and the Europa League in 2013.
Luiz became the world’s most expensive defender when he signed for French champions PSG in June 2014 for £50m (Dh240.6m). In his two seasons at the club, he has won six trophies including successive Ligue 1 titles.
Now, according to Sky Sports, Luiz could be on his way back to Chelsea. The London club have made a £30m offer plus add-ons and are determined to agree a deal before Wednesday's deadline.
Chelsea and manager Antonio Conte have made the signing of a central defender a top priority in the final moments of the summer transfer window, but have so far been frustrated in their efforts.
AC Milan’s Alessio Romagnoli was a top target, but the Serie A side rejected two offers, while Napoli have priced Kalidou Koulibaly out of a move.
Chelsea are also hopeful of concluding a deal for Fiorentina full-back Marcos Alonso. The Spanish defender, 25, is expected to complete a move after a £23m fee was agreed between the two clubs.
